View Full Version : Sweet Deal on a Workbench!

Puget Sound Folk...I just found what looks to be a sweet deal on a right-handed cabinetmaker's workbench on Craig's List at http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/tls/344970067.html
Somebody give it a home -- I'd pick it up but I need a left-handed bench. At $150, the vise hardware would cost you more to buy than this bench does.
6 feet long x 32 inches deep. $150

Sold. The guy built it himself. His wife thinks he's crazy to sell it for $150, and I agreed with her. They're going RVing; no room for the bench. I hope the new owner has fun with it; it looks great. You couldn't buy the wood for that money.

Wow. And I thought I was lucky finding a 1 3/4"x30"x60" strip maple table for $22.50 at the Salvation Army store. . .

Nope. I should have made that clear. By the time I saw Nick's post and called, it was gone. Some lucky guy will enjoy a lifetime with a well made bench that is the product of a craftsman's hands. But for now at least, it isn't me.
The guy just wanted somebody to get the bench and to enjoy it.

Woodcraft sells screws and all the parts; others do as well. For a really high end approach, look at the Veritas tail vise. You can also get vises on Amazon, if I recall correctly; Sojberg and others sell the vises as individual parts.

I've had the Veritas vise in my shop for about 2 years: waiting for a decent benchtop for install! Since I picked up the aforementioned maple top, the vise will get installed soon!

They're a really attractive if somewhat expensive solution. I like the "dual drive" thingy they have that allows you to offset the jaws. Here was a really nice bench, though, for less than the cost of the vise. All that was needed was to be quick on the draw! Sigh.

Grizzly sells some pretty decent maple tops for benches if you want to roll your own.
$150 was WAY too cheap for that bench!

Hopefully when I buy a house (soon?) I'll have somewhere to put a workbench for all the fun little projects I want to do, but don't have anywhere to bloody do 'em in this apartment.
Craigslist is great.

It's expensive, but Lie-Nielsen sells great tail vise hardware.
Insert "LN is too expensive" thread here.

I saw Nick's post not long after it went up, I debated in my mind, as I am already overflowing my available storage space. Had to pass. If not, I would have grabbed it. I hate having to make these decisions. First my, I mean, Lew's boat :D, then this bench.

Wow, I thought it was one of the commercial ones. Considering his WIFE wanted him to save it, you would have thought he would break it down and stash it at a friends.

I really wanted to go grab that workbench, but in hindsight, I see I was spared. I mean, I don't actually do much work!

Somehow I missed your post when I last looked Dingo. Yeah, nice work! Nice color that wood, gives it character.
