The Gringolet is finally starting to come together. She's no longer sitting in the side yard, but has finally made it into the shop.

She has been refastened and the seams are ready to caulk after puting splines in some of the wider seams. The butt blocks and bulkhead have been replaced, old paint removed, both inside and out (I am still swabbing green bottom paint out of my ears), and she's ready for refinishing.
Can't wait to get her in the water.

WOW, the boat and the shop.
I've always enjoyed the (background) shop pictures as well.
Can you tell me a bit more about her?

Doug:
I'm not sure whether you want to hear more about the boat or the shop The shop is Eric Dow's. (http://www.dowboats.com/about.html) Eric makes wonderful Haven 12 1/2s, both in cold molded and plank on frame, as well as a variety of other new construction and repair. Eric is "guiding" the restoration (i.e., he does the hard stuff and I do the less skilled, time consuming messy jobs).
The Gringolet was destroyed in the hurricane of 1954, either Carol or Edna. All that remained was the keel, deadwood, and a portion of the bow containing the bow hardware which suggests she is a pre-September 1936 Herreshoff. She was rebuilt by the Quissett Harbor Boatyard in 1955, sold in 1956 and sailed out of the Quissett Yacht Club until 1968. The boat was then sold in 1968, and then again in 1971 and taken New Hampshire. She was sold again in 1973 and then spent over 30 years sitting in a barn near Concord.
All her wood is solid, and her rigging, both standing and running is still in good shape. The original cotton sails are beyond repair, but she has a good set of dacron sails and a spinnaker which has seen very little use. We had to replace the butt blocks, bulkhead, reattach the combing and rout out some of the wider seams and put in splines. Eric is doing the caulking and she should be painted and in the water next week.
I can hardly wait.

I've figures out a few things about restoring wooden boats:
1. You spend about 95% of your time getting ready to do something and about 5% actually doing it (cf surface preparation in order to paint).
2. If I really want to know how much I'm going to get done, I take the number of things I think I am going to get done, divide by 2 and subtract 1.
She's in the water maybe by the end of the week.

She looks great and I'll bet you have a blast sailing her. Good to have a guy like Eric helping out huh? As I'm sure you'd agree, Mr. Dow knows what he's doing.

This is like a strip tease in reverse. A few more coats of varnish, reinstall hardware, seats, and floors, and she's done. Revised launch date is Tuesday.
