First I want to thank you guys for your input on whether or not I should
carve scrolls in Floozie’s bow. The vote was unanimous-go for it. So here is the result…….

Swimbo did the design work and I did the carving. The scrolls still need some sanding but I think they
look great. I also got the motor well in, built a mock up of the fuel tank to see if it fits and put on the rubrails.

The next project is to put on the deck.
I’m thinking of doing the same deck that I did on my dory, Pas de Deux; 3/8th mahogany strips and
white-pigmented epoxy in the seams.

I think it will look good and the dory has stood up well over the years. Besides, I just love varnish. smile.gif smile.gif ..........Phil

Whooee!! I always feel nervous when I see the standard of the work you blokes do. Bit of fancy joinery in the stern of Floozie and I like the scrollwork. She'll look stunning with that decking too. :D :D

Many criticise (sp) me for being a bit blunt and to the point so please don't take this the wrong way. Think of it as contsructive criticism smile.gif

In my opinion the mahogany strips need to be wider than you have there and the white seams a bit thinner for a better look.
It might just be the photo quality isn't doing it justice but that was my first thought when I saw the picture.

Something like this look is what you want on a larger boat. Check out the detail and workmanship on this beuty folks.

Phil,

I made the aft decks for my dory using 4/4 mahogony with 1/4 x 1 spruce strips glued up in between.

The mahogony was glued and screwed to 1/2" plywood, which was screwed to supports attached to the motor well and gunwhales (typical deck construction). All was sanded fair and epoxy coated. I don't have finished pics on my laptop here in London, but it looks beautiful when sanded and finished with a polyurethane varnish.

I would stay away from the colored googe for the seams and go with spruce or holly strips.

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks for your interest, guys. Banjo, don’t worry about your constructive criticism. I think you’re right, I like the deck you show in the picture and it was my intent to put something similar to that in for the cockpit and cabin sole. I think the deck I was planing may be a little too much varnish even for me to maintain as I slowly approach old geezerhood. So I think I‘m going to paint the deck and the cabin top buff like the inside of the dory.
Jlapratt, that’s a fine looking dory! I would love to see more of her.
Concordia, the plan is to paint the board white and gold leaf the carving. I think if I varnish the board the only way to make it look right would be to put another smaller rubrail under it and another board like it on the transom with her name carved in it .
And Paul-I painted the stem today dammit smile.gif smile.gif ...Phil
