Im planning to repower my '62 Higgins with a 283 Chevy. The boat had a 250ci v8 (AMC?) Graymarine.

The trans behind the current motor is a velvet drive 1.1 , model #AS 1 70B. Im getting the 283 with bellhousing, less the 1.92 velvet drive(not sure of its model#) that was on it.

Im wondering if anyone can tell me if they've made this swap, and, what "problems" I may encounter ( bolt-up pattern, spline count, etc)? Thanks! steve

Bruce or Chris at Lakeland Auto & Marine in Port Clinton, Ohio should be able to give you the information you seek. A great resource for parts and knowledge in these parts. Here's their website---> http://www.lakelandautomarine.com/

The Chev/velvet drive is an extremely popular and common arrangement. As the engine itself is smaller than the AMC in all respects it will drop in just about anywhere something else has been. My approach would be to let the shaft determine where the engine will mount. Leave the shaft in the current location and mount the engine/ trans in front of it. You will need a Chev/velvet drive bell housing, a manual or marine flywheel, and a drive plate. The drive plates are not sold by application but by specification. All the stuff you need is guaranteed to be at the nearest engine and transmission dealer or marine repairman.
