"PORTSMOUTH — A search continued today off the North Carolina coast for a 54-foot sailboat and a crew of four, missing since Monday when they activated an emergency beacon in a strong storm that heavily damaged at least three other sailboats.
The Coast Guard is using fixed wing aircraft and helicopters to search a broad area about 160 miles southeast of Cape Lookout, N.C.
The crew is described as experienced and carried all safety and communications equipment on board, according to a news release.
The crew members have been identified as Patrick Topping, 39, Jason Franks, 34, Rhiannon Borisoff, 22, and Christine Grinavic. All have Rhode Island addresses, the Coast Guard said. They had been sailing from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands to Annapolis, Md.
The vessel, named Flying Colours, has been described as having a blue hull with either a green or light blue keel, with a white topside, teak decks and lots of stainless steel.
The search began early Monday when Coast Guard officials at the Rescue Coordination Center in Portsmouth received an alert from the Flying Colours’ emergency position indicating radio beacon, or EPIRB, at 3:30 a.m., the release said. The signal was lost at 7:00 a.m.
Coast Guard C-130 and a HH-60 Jayhawk crews from Elizabeth City along with the crew of the TAMPA searched 9,858 square miles since Monday but have not found the vessel.
Anyone who has information regarding the Flying Colours should contact the command center at 757-398-6390."
