Party in building and repair? Yes, this Saturday shortly after noon I'm gonna put the whiskey plank on my boat, we will be toasting here and because my 2 sons are as much as 1/2 way around the world and unable to attend we are going to have a cyber party and I'm inviting all other interested folks to join in and tip one wherever you are. ;) Of course if any forumites are close enough and care to attend in person you are invited. ;)

Cool! It's earlier in the day than I usually start, but, for such a good cause, I'll make an exception. ;)

Ken, will the road into your place be plowed out by Saturday?

Ken Hutchins

Road plowed? Of course, this isn't taxachusetts. :D This road gets more and better attention in winter than most highways. :D

Ken,

I'll have to be there in spirit only.

I have plans with the wife and friends that can't be changed at this late time :(

But I really want to come up sometime and check it out in person.

Congrats!
Bob

Congratulations.

I'll check my schedule to see if I can run up the road to help/celebrate Saturday. If you need help Friday, let me know... I'm supposed to be working on my own boat, but I'd love to help then too.

Ken:

What's the drive time from Walden Pond, Civil Disobedience, Taxachusetts to your place? I've got cabin fever and might, big maybe, be able to break free.

I've searched the whole house and all I could find was a 6 ounce bottle of Budweiser (baby Bud :D ) left over from our New Years party in the crisper drawer of the fridge. It will have to do. ;)

Sorry Ken, I couldn't break free, the "Honey Do" list (actually she just barks the orders tongue.gif ) was too long and I should be getting some of these canoe projects advanced before spring.

I will have alittle Jameson's in celebration :D .

I think I still need more whiskey, it was quite a day. This day was actually planned a couple of months ago, when my brother declared that he wanted to be here when I cut the tree for the mast, and thus it became a mast tree cutting party. Well as it got close to the planned day I got to thinking about it also being a whiskey plank party. Well last night I got to thinking and worrying about cutting a tree and putting a plank on the boat for the first fitup with an audience of a bunch of people some taking pictures, if I screw up there will be photos, and I've got 2 chances to screw up, this could be embarrasing redface.gif .
So the day arrives and at the appointed time we all travel down back to the tree. Ok I'm confident, suit up in safety gear make sure everyone is well clear, start the saw, make the wedge cut, start the felling cut, insert wedges, holler out the warning and cut to the final depth of the felling cut leaving a good amount of hinge wood. ;) Now start swinging the hammer on the wedges, 2 of them one wooden (of course) and the primary beater wedge of aluminum. Well that #$$%@ aluminum wedge bounced right back of of the tree  , put it back in hammer again and out it goes, now I'm getting a bit nervous never had this happen before frozen wood is no doubt the problem. Well the wooden wedge was holding the tree but would not lean it to fall. So time to put the come-along on it to get it moving. A bit of strain and it started to fall nicely. ;) Now I had planned on the pine to fall just to the right of a hemlock, sacrifice the hemlock and I also had a bed of limbs prepared for the pine to fall on. But with the come-along used to start the falling it fell virtually dead center on the hemlock and rolled down the left side instead of the right side. Oh well the sacraficial hemlock worked fine slowing the fall and the pine landed rather softly. ;) OH do I need that whiskey.
So pack up the tools and travel back up to the boat. On the way up we met Abe, Bob Perkins and Erik Saunders who were walking down towards the tree. So after some refreshments and warm drinks we went out to the boat to annoint and toast the plank. Then we carried the plank out of the barn, back into the boatshed and clamped it in place as I'm thinking oh this is good I don't need a major embarresment of a lousy fit. But alas it fits rather nicely. ;) Time for more of that whiskey and lunch.
It was rather nice to have some of my family and friends here, but it sure was nerve racking. When I get the pictures of the tree cutting I will post them.

At ha-past noon, I put down my paintbrush and walked into the kitchen, where SWMBO was doing dishes. I took a bottle of Jack down, and a nice shotter, poured 3 fingers, and tossed it off.

SWMBO asked if I had screwed something up in my painting project, and I said "No, some crazy wooden boat builder in New Hampshuh is installing his whiskey plank today, and I'm helping."

I went back to my painting, much warmer, judging from the pics, than y'all were.

Well forumites,

If there is one thing I have learned from experience, pictures never do the project justice.

I have a few from the day - but WOW!

I'm glad I finally got to go visit this one - It was inspiring. Put me on the list for the next event. If Woodenboat doesn't do an article on this one - They are missing the essence of their readership.

Take Care,

A little late, but I'll have a shot of Maker's Mark...

Sorry I couldn't be there in person but, as they say, life is what happens when you are making other plans.

And Mr Bergman! What could be finer than to see you grace these pages again. And Mr Cleek as well. Perhaps there is hope...

Edited to add:

Just as Mr Chelsea struck 8 bells. Ahhhhh, that's good. :D
