I need to buy canvas and filler to re-canvas my 12' PenYan Cartopper. Can I use #10 duck canvas from any supplier (non marine) or do I need a special canoe canvas. Is shrinking an issue, etc? Thanks.
The cartoppers were canvased with a very light canvas or muslin, I believe filled with airplane dope, nitrate or butyl dope. I think you would do well to canvas with #10 duck and canvas filler. For canvas filler, I wonder if a latex primer (Fredrix? for artists canvas - can be had with canvas from Pearl Art Supply) wouldn't be good.
I'm in a rush and can post more later, but you can use No. 10 duct, but you might want to use a mildewcide. The WCHA website is down temporarily, but there are lots of sources for canvas and filler on there. I sometime use untreated canvas and lead based filler, or treated canvas and unleaded filler.
www.wcha.org (http://www.wcha.org) when they get done straightening out what a hacker did - PITA.
