Do they really exist? Or are we just being kind to marginal members of our society whom have a basic control of one or two media?
Are there potential "Idiot Savants" among us here on the WBF? And if there are.....What should be done about it?

I'm relatively sure of the idiot part, but the savant part is open for discussion.

It's curious --- whenever I've seen these kids showcased on TV, their "savant" skills are only impressive in relationship to everything else that they can't do. If they had the same "savant" skills mixed with average abilities elsewhere, they'd never find themselves on TV, or getting anyone's attention. I think the description says more about the audience than it does the subject.

Savant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look up savant in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
A savant (IPA: /səˈvænt/) is a learned person, well versed in literature or science as well as the fine arts, often with an exceptional skill in a specialized field of learning. The word is a loanword from the French language.
So you were talking about me!! gawd you know me soooo well eh!
BUT WAIT THERES MORE!!
Savant may also refer to:
* Autistic savant, pejoratively "idiot savant," an autistic person with Savant Syndrom
something tells me Im not going to like this...
Autistic savant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
An autistic savant (historically described as idiot savant) is a person with both autism and Savant Syndrome. Savant Syndrome describes a person having both a severe developmental or mental handicap and extraordinary mental abilities not found in most people. The Savant Syndrome skills involve striking feats of memory and often include arithmetic calculation and sometimes unusual abilities in art or music.

an 'idiot savant'. His situation is basically that he has total recall of anything and everything that he has ever read or seen. Must be absolutely horrible unless it works in such a way as I can not imagine it.
I have been around this guy for about 20 years now and I have never heard anyone ask him a question that he couldn't answer. Maybe they weren't asking the right questions? Anyway, I have always felt sorry for this guy because he basically is on an island by himself 24/7. A very nice fellow, but very few people can tolerate being close to him for any length of time.

I am that with numbers ... stats, etc.
In fact, when we watch Deal/No Deal, my wife gets so pi$$ed at me, when I make the banker's offer (with a couple hundred bucks) before the banker does!

I believe the term is savant, one need not use the "idiot" part. There are savants who are more or less "normal," in other respects and there are savants who are otherwise diagnosed "retarded or autistic" hence the addition of the rather archaic term "idiot." And yes, they do exist. Not common, but people with incredible abilities in art, music, math, physics, far beyond just being smart or having good memories. People who can carry out almost instant mathematical operations in their heads that would otherwise require several steps on a calculator. People who can tell you in seconds, what day of the week January 4, 1805 was. Far out stuff.
I may not be an idiot savant but I don't mind a good plate of jumbo shrimp.

brad9798 ---
Deal/No Deal: Last time I examined the "banker's" offers, they were much less than the numbers would indicate. His offer should be about sum of the numbers left on the board divided by the number of numbers.

There was a special on TV a few months back on this topic. Kim was one of their main focal points. A very interesting show indeed! Discovery or PBS, can't remember which. I obviously don't fit the needed criteria.. ;) ;)
