I am currently looking at restoring a 1947 Herreshoff Prudence Class 23'. There is very little information (or atleast I can find very little) available on the boat, its sailing characteristics and history. Can anyone provide either specific information or association or web site opportunities. If I move forward, I will keep people up to date with log and pictures. I love the lines, but would like more information before I start.

There is a book written by L.F. Herreshoff by the title Sensible Cruising Designs , in which you will find a great deal about "Prudence". Including lines, history and design philosophy, if I remember correctly.
Best,

Best,
JackYou remember correctly, Jack. The book even has a picture of "Prudence," one of LFH's personal boats, on the cover.

This it? Certainly looks a worthy project! Got any pictures of your potential project yet?

Thank you all. I have ordered it and will keep you posted. Any additional thoughts would be helpful after I get a better lok at the scope of the project. I'd like to have her ready to go in the water by May or June 2003.

Congratulations. They are wonderful boats. My Dad and I have had one for two years, which we sail on Lake Champlain. It was built in 1969. For a roomy and stable boat it is surprisingly fast. We have a second one in the barn, built in 1940 at Guilliford's Yard on Saugus, MA, which we hope to get around to restoring soon. You must provide details (and lots of pictures) of yours.
I got so far years ago of working up a materials list. A couple of years ago a group of older gentlemen was in my shop talking about boats, what else. One of them spoke about a little sloop they had come upon in the mouth of Gloucester harbor in lively conditions, the little thing handling it all well and having a grand time. "But what was the name?" he asked. Was it PRUDENCE? "That's it!" Confirmed my interest. Hope it inspires yours.

They are lovely little boats, a good friend of mine owned one a few years ago, cruised her pretty extensively and loved the boat. I have sailed her and found her to be comfortable and easy and fun to sail. In fact, I have a photo of her sailing one day in light airs on the wall in my house. But all of this is moot once you read those great writings of LFH and then get on board-it'll be all over for you and you'll have a new boat!!! But, they are lovely, if you'd like, I can refer you to the fellow who owned one and he can give you an educated (very) and more accurate opinion.
