View Full Version : I've been Scot-ed...
... and I apologise to all whom I've offended.
Yesterday I replied to Bernadette's thread in which she was looking for a designer and obviously broke the Forum rule against self-promotion. I didn't intend to do this; I just wasn't thinking as I posted the reply.
So, to all, I am sorry. Forum rules is Forum rules, and I broke 'em. Bad me.
What the heck. The apple blossoms this time of year always put me in a good mood. I'm going to forgive you.

Yanno.....(Oh....Forgiven....Carry on...) The rules are a little bit blurry at times... Margo asked for help with Sara, and I offered to do so. Technically an infraction... My thread on "The Tobago Project"....Probably an infraction. Any number of threads concerning boat parts needing homes, or homes needing boat parts... And enforcement seems spotty or haphazard... Perhaps it's only when someone files a complaint, but who would complain about Mssr. Mason offering his services to Bernadette? (Design services!!!)

I never complain but did think YMT was pushing the rules rather blatently, and may be the partial cause of your.......problem........I have suggested off line that she contact you or Luc......:D

The line seems to be when your are advertising yourself as a professional in a marine related business for hire to a specific request for help.

I don't get it. I will stick my .02 worth in here. Numerous threads exist pushing plans that may meet of fit the needs for one and all, that take the time to read this WBF. Wooden Boat Magazine and the Wooden Boat forum , I bet, receives nothing in return from the profit and proceeds of plans, products, and services that are posted by individual members on this forum, since there is truely no way to track what is purchased as a direct result of the postings that represent Atkins, Bateau. com, E-Bay, hardware and fasteners that go into the building of any hulls, epoxy that is sold as a direct result of the sells of plans that come out of the postings in a thread as just a few examples. Are any representitives from even the listed ones active members here and give freely in return as a direct result of having their products plastered across numerous threads?
At least there are those that give freely of their expertise, many which make their living in the areas of boats and designs. I have never seen Mike ask for anything in return as a daily diet, on this forum for sticking around and taking any heat as a direct result of his postings, with followups or posts that continue to provide support for clarity.
Many other people in the field also have provided a lot of knowledge on this forum, free of charge, with nothing asked in return.
I also agree with Lefty and his assessment of the previous events. There is little consistancy, if you give weight to any of his evidence , for sure.
Oh well......

Actually when you stop and think about it, the section on this forum that is provided for products search is a billboard for someone or some product.

I agree with that but at the same time, most who post on that forum has no interest or gain in the product.
What Micheal did was a glitch... It was a mistake.. nothing more.
I also think that certain forums are monitored differently. Anything seems to go in the bilge because it is not monitored tech.
Now, I have been offered help with certain situations that required expertise.. I won't list them. I guess that those who offered expertise paid for or not.. just pm'd me.
I donno.. I missed mmd's post.... But I can say that, in many ways, all of us, once in a while cross the line.. intentionally or not.. mmd did not intentionally cross the line although he did cross the line I guess from what I can gather....
No biggie...
It's not as though he was listing items for sale at discount rates....

Did he? Ive had a fair bit of contact with both Michael and Yves over the years for one reason or another and both have always maintained a professional manner at all times... toward each other and if it came up about one another or any other designer that may be mentioned... never has either objected in anyway to anything the other has said.
Michael mate its cool... and PLEASE answer the question about the email address!! I know I sent you an email some months back but never got a response... I just put it down to you bein busy as heck... so is that your current email?
mind you Im starting to feel unloved here... havent heard from either of them for some time now... last time Yves contacted me was to show me his latest pilot boat design... sigh soooo nice... but that was way back a couple of years now... and Michael I really do need to know something about one of your designs from that work in progress "cattledog" you sent me so please contact okay?
Okay as you were... its all good
oh and I agree with Mike erster

Self promotion and someone else promoting a person which may or may not be a member here, a service, or product thats being sold on e-bay, or craig's list, constitutes what difference regarding violations in the minds of legal scholars or guidelines for which members login here? If the product is being sold, a service is being provided, and any of the stuff is in inferior, thats even worse when someone else promotes it, too. But still when money is exchanged, this forum has provided a virtual billboard for some form of promotion. The magazine was begun to support and grow the wooden boat community. There are some folks here that do this fulltime and provide support with their own words each and everyday, some more than others. Some of this stuff cannot be found in some library as quick as it can be found here in this site, if some real standard was in place.
Jamie you speak about the experiences of your boat work which also may provide imput even for a lurker to take their schooner to that remote island. Giving back to a community in the form of taking time out to answer a question or provide some formula to figure out if Chad's boat will sink or stay afloat, as just one example, actually supports and helps the board grow and to promote the original intent of the forum, too.
People can sure weigh the replies and take some peace of mind that when MMD replies, its pretty spot on, even though some may not like what is stated.
Look I have no real issue with speaking up in this case. If it places me at risk, then I take that chance. But on the other hand, if the single issue of civility was enforced across this forum as heavy handed as this was for a one liner, there would be many many more MMDs posting each day, and not an occasional post once or twice a week or every two weeks.
I will slide once more to the old goat's bench and let the cards fall as they may. Its a nice day for a trip to the shore today.

Hello. Ya old goat.....and Shane....no one was condemning YMT....I just said that he was more overt at his trade than Michael, but I said nothing to disparage either party. There are NUMEROUS folks here that "are in the trades" and after a while you know who they are, and a helluva lot of good stuff crosses wires here....no condemnation of anyone. I try to see merits in everyones work......I just can't help it if I like slow heavy old style stuff......;)

I've noticed a few posters who have thier business info in the sig line. Some have web links and logos. I find this more obnixious than anyone offering thier services in REPLY to a request for help.
Open solicitation of any kind (direct or passive) should be banned. But saying, "hey I do that, talk to me off line" is ok.

Ahhh worst things have happened for sure.....drinks are on Michael !!
Seems to me this forum would serve an even better purpose to have a section where people could advertise their boat services and seek boat related services. It would seem to be a logical extension of the purpose of this forum. Shoot if they need server space ditch the bilge its pretty much worthless anyway...........

they are not asking too much you respect a few simple rules to abide by , it would be poor business sense for wb to undercut paid advertisers
JimD, my current e-mail is in my profile. Rather than post it publicly, sent an e-mail to me via the WBF and I'll be sure to reply.
Scot didn't banish me, he just deleted my answer to Bernadette. My sin was to reply openly on the Forum rather than send it via PM.

In other forums I frequent. vendors are allowed to self promote as long as they pay a fee.
I think your 'fee' has been well paid over the years with all the helpfull advice your given over the years. Next time I see someone ask for a designer you'll be #1 on my list of recommendations.

Perhaps so in this thread, but he(YMT) is still workin' it further down in the "I'm Thinking Of Building An AS-29.." thread, post No. 6 and 9 along with the "Very Shoal Draft Designs" thread, post No. 26.
Frustrating for all,no doubt, but the Host of this forum does have rules and these should be upheld.

Sent brief note this morning to the administrator and the above "breach of rules"has been happily and swifly corrected for the sake of fairness to Mr. Mason. Thank you Mr. Adminstrator :-)
