It happened last night when I folded them just before getting in bed. The left temple piece broke off inside the spring mechanism that lets you pull them out farther than you should. The tech at my optomotrist said manufacturing defect and ordered a replacement part under warantee.

Thing is, scotch tape is obsolete, passee, and just not geeky enough. Instead, he did the temporary repair with a bit of clear heat-shrink tubeing. Now the hinge won't work, but I can still wear them. There's enough of the hinge side that slides into the temple piece that it doesn't flex much as long as it's held together. Had I known I could have done it myself. I don't have clear, mind you, but I think I may have blue, yellow, or black.

So can't you "reinforce" the repair with something a little more snazy? For that matter, borrow (or buy) some psychedelic colors of nail polish and just improve on the original. :D

Note: when/if you buy croakies or some such lanyard for your glasses, (the kind you jam the ear curve into) remove the factory plastic tubing and replace with heatshrink. If your frames are metal and they have some funky pattern sprayed on them, insulate them from the heat as you shrink the tube down. It won't be bombproof but will be far less likely to fail than the factory attachment tubes, which have a tendency to go at the worst possible moment.

Phew... glad your alright. When I read the thread title and author, thoughts of another sawmill incident sprang to mind.
