Killed in a broadside car crash, San Francisco.

I heard him speak once (a good speaker) and enjoyed his books.

Missed, indeed - one of the finest non-fiction writers ever.
Along with his political and major-issue works, he wrote a fantastic boat about Olympic rowing titled 'The Amateurs' - it's an absolute masterpiece.

Lovely writer and a thoughtful man.

He was on his way to interview someone about a sporting event, football, I think.
