More than a year ago I ask for help to determine the prop size for a 32' 6 ton yawl with a 1.9 VW diesel. I got raked over the coals by some and cheered on by others for installing such a large engine in that little boat. I feel it my duty to update the group since you spent your time trying to help me.
The motor now has 125 hours and has done everything I expected it to do. The prop size ended up being a two blade 14" with a pitch of ??? At 2500 RPM the prop pushed the boat 6.5 knots. I could have gotten more out of it but seldom ran it past 2500. My only real problem was that I used a V belt for the sea water pump and will change to direct drive off the crankshaft. The motor is extremely quiet even though there was no water lift muffler system. I happened to be out the day before Brazils only recorded hurricane. The seas were pretty wild and my closest safe layover point was dead into the wind. That's when extra power comes in handy. I made good headway into some rough weather and laid over for a couple of days in a safer harbor. The 8 HP would have for sure fallen short of keeping be out of trouble.
I recently sold the yawl with an 8 HP Yanmar and the VW motor will eventually go in a 40' radius chine steel boat. My current project is a 36' multi chine steel hull that will receive a 33 HP Yanmar. Why such a heavy beast ...... Well, I have one setting in my shop and it needs a home.

Thanks for the update Gerald.I can't remember if you told us what gearbox you used on the VW ? What's the HP output at 2500 rpm ?

The motor is a 1Y with no turbo. It is supposed to put out 70+ HP at some ridiculous high RPM that I can't remember off the top of my head? At 2,500 it might be putting out 50? It for sure did not lack power while installed in KATY.
The gear box was a product of China that came with the boat when I bought it. It has an 1 1/2" diameter main shaft and gears about 1 1/4" wide so it was for sure built heavy enough to do the job even though it was in a rather small case.
