So I have been slowly chipping away on Therapy getting her ready for the woodwork & repairs that are planned and I had got to the point where there is not alot more I can do until my lumber arrives & carpenter is ready.

The one area which I had been trying not to think about was the nasty looking area of epoxy and 5200 slathered all over the stem on the water line. It basically looked like someone had hit something, cut out the damage square and installed a piece of 4x2, planed it down then flicked half a cup of epoxy on with a spoon & let their two year old spread on 5200 (boat in a tube) for a stunning cream and off white colour combination.

Speaking of colour combinations, under the white is a previous paint job of bright yellow. Combine this with the green boot stripe and you have a boat which looks horribly Australian. Being a Kiwi this HAS to go! ;)

Back on topic!

Here is what i was faced with:

So after a tough day at work I went down to the boat and set about taking back all the epoxy and seeing what horrors lay beneath. As I ground away I found that the aft most seam was actually a v-shaped bronze saddle that I guess holds the brass bump strip on the leading edge of the bow in place. Huh?? Wheres the new wood? It all looked like original keel to me. I slowly worked up to the seam just above the water line and found a wedge shaped piece that speparates the old keel from what seemed to be a almost new stem!

Talk about a sigh of relief & wanting to kill the guy who did some poor epoxy bedding of the planks and then never even dressed up the area he had worked!

Admittedly it looks like the strake/plank hood end that meets this area have been epoxied in & im none to excited about that considering im planning on removing this plank & replacing it due to rot at the other end.
Still not a great area but a hell of a lot better than expected.

The same goes for the 4200'ed seams below the water line. I decided to have a little dig at these while I still had some daylight left. It seems (hah!) that the original seam compound was still in there and just dried up & cracked so the man who did the dodgy epoxy repairs just laid 4200 over top.

The 4200 came away from the seams with a minimum of fuss & left a nice clean edge with dry compound and cotton that comes out with the slightest persuasion with a small awl.

Talk about every cloud has a silver lining!

Im going home to murder a couple of beers and a roast chicken. :D
