I just recieved the plans for my 26' Bistol Channel Cutter. I can't wait to get going!!!
As I look over the material list for my boat, they list the sizes as (3" sided 9" molded 9' long).
I undertsnd the 9" long, but what is sided and molded?

Thanks

Paul

I'll try to jump in before Cleek. We all know how he loves these traditional boatbuilding questions. According to the plans for Eun Na Mara by Iain Oughtred, the stem is sided 2 1/2" and molded 2". The 2 1/2" dimension is athwartships and the 2" dimension is fore and aft on the vertical part of the post. Of course the 2" dimension follows right down around a 1/4 turn to where it is scarphed into the keel. Best of luck on the project.

O.K., you got your garden variety 2x6 from the Borg and it's 8 feet long. It's sided 2" and molded 6" as I understand it. Ya folla? (borrowed from Dave Fleming).

Good luck on the project,
Cecil

Um, wouldn't that depend on how the plank was oriented in the boat rather than in the lumber yard?

I understand it to mean: sided is the constant dimension and molded refers to the dimension that is to be fitted, cut or molded to shape. I could be wrong, but it works for me.

Norm, they all lay the same way in the lumberyard :D . I give up, ask Cleek if you dare.

"The molded dimension of any piece is its dimension measured in from the outside toward the interior of the hull. Thus, for a keel timber, the molding is the vertical dimension (the up-and-down direction points into the interior). Conversely, for the sheer clamp, the molding is the horizontal dimension (the side to side direction points to the interior). The siding is the direction at right angles to the molded dimension that is not running along the length of the woodgrain. A deck beam's molding, for example, is the up and down direction; its siding is the fore and aft direction..."
