My two brothers, dad, and I have gone in on a 1965 Modified H-28 built by Far East (Hull #80).

We had a survey done and are well on our way to getting her back in the water but a lot of work remains as well.

Older brother has been replacing a few planks. Dad is figuring out if we should rebuild the Atomic 4 ourselves or buy a rebuilt one. I'm working on replacing all of the rigging (standing and running).

I am a little worried about getting the rigging puzzle back the way it was. I hope my cryptic labeling and diagrams will pay-off.

Questions:

1) There is an area of the bilge below the engine that is not accessable when the engine is installed. This area is actually lower than the bilge pump so there is always 4 or 5 inches of water between these two ribs. Should we worry about it? Should we try to fill it with something so it empties all the way out? It appears as though someone slapped some tar in there at one point.

2) The main and mizzen shrouds were lashed to the spreaders with tape and wire. I have always counted on tension to hold the shroud in the grove. Should I put it back the way it was?

That is all for now. I am sure I'll will have a few more when I get back from the boat yard.

The tape and/or wire really should only be there to keep things sorted while stepping the mast. Once the rig is properly tensioned, the shroud should hold its own place.
(Unless of course the boat has a lot of give and the leeward shrouds go slack in a blow)

Rebuild the A4 yourself. It's not a complicated beast, and the intimacy gained through such an exercise will serve you well as time passes.

Where are you?

The four of us are spread out around the Northern San Francisco Bay.

3) The spars are painted white. The paint is failing and we are in the process of sanding them. Is there a "best" paint to use on a spruce mast? I have no idea what the current paint is. We want both masts to remain white.

Oops. I just realized this thread is in the wrong place. Perhaps a moderator can move it upstairs.

My own H28 is an origional version of the design but the hull is essentialy the same. The Universal Diesel sits over the low section of the bilge. I have an electric pump mounted one bay fwd of the low area. I also have a Whale Gusher manual pump that has its intake snaked down along side the engine into the low spot. It is worth doing as dirty water does accumulate in that area.

The origional design for the retension of the shrouds at the spreader tips calls for a bronze band that caps over the shroud and is screw attached to the spreader on both the fore and aft sides, The speader is held at its proper angle by a marlin serving that is built up above and below the band. A long serving is first placed on the wire to eliminate chafe and provide a surface for the built up serving to cling to. This is a sweet arrangement as the smooth band prevents the spreader tip from snagging halyards and sails.
