Anyone know anthing about these (this)? Does it seem like it might be a good investment considering I'd be looking for a reliable motor and not just a piece of diesel history.

1957 2 cylinder, 10hp @1800 rpm, air cooled Lister marine diesel engine and gear. This unusual engine has been used all over Europe to power canal boats. It has a 12 volt electric starter or can be crank started. Both work equally well. Crank starting is easy and pretty cool. The gear is a 2:1 reduction with F-N-R and includes the original shift lever. Also included is a bronze shaft, coupler, motor mounts, packing box, bronze 16X13 prop and other parts for a complete installation in a period correct boat. This would work great in a 19-24' displacement hull. Low rpm and great fuel economy. This engine starts easy and runs great. It is currently mounted on a skid and I can load into a pickup with an engine hoist. I'll be glad to start and demo by appointment.

I've got a Lister STW2 raw water cooled diesel powering my 8.5kva generator. Its been good to me - although I noted yesterday that it was producing a few too many hertz and volts, so I checked the revs and it is at 774rpm without load.

The air cooled Listers (I think mainly the triple cylinder versions) were used by many Australian fishing trawlers since before Christ was a boy. The main reason for their use was the shallow estuaries that many operated in and shallow creek and river bars that they had to cross - air cooled, so they didn't suck sand through their impellors.

It sounds like a bargain if you've got the right boat in mind.

Shhhh, one of the Envro Nazis will come up from the bilge and condemn it for not being green enough. I'm all for old, bullet proof low tech diesels.

Lister made good engines in those days, but I wouldn't call it an antique. There still Listers from the 20's chugging along.

The air cooled 3 cylinder Listers were very popular. I think its partly due to the minimal servicing requirements (no heat exchangers, etc. to worry about), just start em up and they keep on going.

See the fan inside the cage? That's going to whir and whine something horrible. Up north the old boats would use pinex inside the motor box to insulate the sound around the motor and usually they'd have a big canvas chute inside of which was the exhaust (dry, of course) up to the cabin ceiling. Then there'd be a box with a grill around its four sides
and the exhaust pipe with muffler out the top, usually capped with an old can when not in use.
