Had a eye exam appointment today.
Yeah everything is fine with this 'old geezer', thank goodness!

I keep a book or two just for such times, don't read 'em otherwise.

This one is called " From Tree to Sea", author Ted Frost, publisher Terence Dalton, Suffolk.

It is about the building of a wooden steam drifter from loft to launch.

Anyhoo, he uses the term ***chargehand***to describe some of the shipwrights in the yard where the drifter was being built.

Question: what is a *** chargehand***?

I used to spend time in Old Blighty at my old company's chemical plants. A chargehand is like a foreman or supervisor IIRC.

A rank below a foreman but above a regular workman

Yes I think so, here they are often called a leading hand.

Yes.

And its a good book, describing my part of the country, as it was. I knew some of these old geezers when I was just starting out messing about in boats.

"...and now I am one."
