"Catriona, a Scottish lass portrayed in a novel by Robert Louis Stephensen, is the name christening this magnificent 57 HERRESHOFF BOUNTY. Built to exacting standards and traditional construction this great yacht demanded only the best in marine carving. The Lunenburg Chiselworks rose to that occasion and created this stern badge and trail boards, a design of noted marine artist William Gilkerson. Decoration of this calibre is reminiscent of the days when great yachts raced the waters of the Chesapeake and Nantucket Sound. Catriona has leapt from the pages and is now as free as the wind.

I don't have the time to figure out how to post a photo, but go to www.putfile.com/kevinmb (http://www.putfile.com/kevinmb) and in there I have pictures of my crabbing skiff with ribbon transom boards I carved. Is this what you have in mind?

boyles.. I stopped in to this particular shop with Airlie's wheel.. I was there an hour.. They had almost talked me into something like mmd's post before I left. I threw my checkbook in the back of the car and did not even look for it for 48 hours..
But the workmanship, the examples.. damn....

Name boards are really called arch boards. I've carved them for Disney as well as the stern lettering of both of the Pardy's boats and many other Bristol Channel Cutters.

Just as an FYI, the transom badge I posted a picture of above, the trailboards also shown on the Chiselworks' website, and a second (less complicated) transom badge and trailboards for the client's other Herreshoff rang the cash register for approximately $10,000.00 USD. These are the carving items that were featured in Bill Gilkerson's article on marine carving in a recent edition of WoodenBoat.

Jay, I am under the impression that a nameboard carved in the shape of an arched ribbon is indeed called an archboard, but that one that incorporates a decorative object in addition to the nameboard is referred to as a transom badge. However, I certainly have been wrong often enough in the past, and would welcome further education in the matter.

You mean that someone possibility had mortaged their boat just to put a name on it?
- boylesboats

Trust me, this client had no need to borrow money for their boat. It was a dream project(s) that I probably will never see the likes of again.

"Mr. Mason, I wish to build a Bounty to the level that Mr. Herreshoff would do were he alive today. I must impress upon you that for this project, quality is much more important than cost. Will you help me?"

When I regained conciousness....
