A friend has a 1930’s vintage Blanchard Senior Knockabout that is getting its keel plank replaced due to iron sickness caused by corrosion of the keel bolts. He had a hard time tracking down a nice piece of 1.25 inch thick clear Douglas fir for the replacement, eventually finding an 8-inch wide by about 18 feet long plank from a firm that recycles lumber. The replacement was resawn from a much heavier beam. We began shaping the new keel plank last fall and halted work as winter set in. In the meantime the plank has developed a split or check as shown in the photos below. Is there any way to salvage the replacement keel plank or must he track down some better lumber?

Thanks for your advice.

In my own humble opinion, the orintation of the grain is such that the plank will continue to split. I would, sadly, consider finding another piece of stock. It looks like this was cut from a tree that grew with winding grain. If there is not too much shape or curve to the plank, quarter sawn stock can be used which, will have less tendency to peel split. If thick enough the curvature can be planed into the piece. However, slash grain will be easier to bend. Beware of edge setting!

He'll need a new stick from a different beam.
