The movies are fun, but the more I know about boats, the less I enjoy watching fantasy boats operating under the laws of "Hollywood physics" in movies. The opening bit of the first Pirates was just wierd when the submerged boat kept 'sailing' into the harbor, and the part near the end where they used the anchor to make a high-speed 90 degree turn was downright silly....
Was watching the BBC's version of CS Lewis' _The Silver Chair_ a few nights ago on DVD, and realized that all the underwater boat scenes were actually using the rowers as real propulsion. Nowadays boats in film all seem to have either electric or underwater-cable propulsion.

Ya, we noticed those things too, Thorne....but as you said, it's fantasy! :)

I understand, but still vastly prefer movies with 'proper' boats that really sail in real wind (well, mostly) like _Surprise_ in Master & Commander...
That said, I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the Flying Dutchman and chinese junk in the new POC.

For most of the scences the Interceptor was a real ship.

The actors/actresses got a real kick out of sailer her.
If you rent/own the 2part DVD, there's a small movie of them sailing it down there.

I absolutely loathed and despised the first movie.

Hmm, my two marevedi's worth....the '90 degree turn' is explained in 'a Midshipman's Sheet Anchor', clubhauling is a tactic used to stay off a lee shore, or to oppose an enemy. To be used as a 'last resort' of course, but standard Royal Navy practice for the time. As for 'boats', Disney got tired of the boat owners sniveling about this and that, so they built a few of their own....As for the 'cable propulsion in films..perhaps once upon a time, but..we've done two films, headed for possibly # 3 and 4, and all we've ever done is sail or motorsail, no added inventions......besides the Lady, Providence was used for scenes in POTC II & III....4 and 5 are in 'discussion' from Ted and Terry, the writers.......

I've had my daysailor sail under water. After a capsize, we managed to right her by standing on the center board, but the main wouldn't drop. She sailed off by herself. Full of water, she nosed under and continued for a few yards until she rolled. A very odd and disappointing sight.

Finally saw it last night.
Good, though not quite what I was expecting.
I'm going to have to see it again to really get that plot down LOL
