..then I thought about getting a patent, marketing, etc. Anyway, while I was organizing the tool bag and piling up a half-dozen wrenches--open-ended on one end and boxed on the other--I slipped them on a caribiner clip, sliding it through the box ends. It not only keeps them together, but you still can use the open end of any wrench in the set without taking them apart. I'd post a photo, but that doesn't seem to work at the moment.

Cool idea :)

It is a good idea, loose tools are a nuisance. I use wire for my old spanners but anything new has 2 criteria to meet. 1. tool quality. 2. how they are held/stored. Socket sets with that light plastic moulding in the case.. what a pain when the first corner breaks off.....

Yo John - re: socket storage :D

More than you need aboard, but for working in the shop. They are all RIGHT THERE :) 1/4 drive to 1/2 drive. Need a 5/8???? One box does it all... well, two - metrics ended up in their own container...
Hey, it's NOT easy being obsessive compulsive
Edited to add: sailordave had a good idea when he was here, and we took a Sharpie marker and wrote the sizes on all the loose sockets. I mean it's not like I have to hold one out at arm's length and squint to see what stupid size is lightly imprinted on the stupid thing...... ;) :)

sharpie marker. yeah right.
after Dave had been around writing 'Lefty was here' inside the ceiling on Sarah ,he used your blood red fingernail polish to mark out the sockets... c'mon .. thats the truth isn't it.

I think I will use your idea Dan. Not because it's so great but because while I'm rumaging around in the kit looking for one of three 9/16" wrenches I keep in there, I forget what I wanted it for:D:D

That is a good idea! ---- Just like it was 50 years ago when my Dad keep his combination wrenches that way on an old fashion shower curtain ring in his tool box.
And God save the person who did not put them back that way after using them!!!

My tool system worked fabulously until two things happened. Age dulled the photographic memory a tad and the kids started to use the tools. Didn't matter where a tool was - I knew where it was. Not any more.
You don't have to be a socket scientist to see the potential here.

moT I had a feeling that I wasn't the first to dream this up.

I do it all the time when climbing towers, working on rooftops or ladders. The other advantage is ONE safety line attached to the tools as opposed to one for each tool. Less to get tangled, and makes it easier to find in the rigging bag.
The other thing that helps when you are working in an elevated location- ladders, towers, masts, etc. is wrap the tool handles with friction tape. It provides a slightly tacky grip, and you will not drop as many tools.

At least you didn't say I used her fingernail polish on MY FINGERNAILS!
And haven't you guys figgered out that sailors are some of the most O-C people in the world. I mean if your articulated metric widget is supposed to be in the 3rd drawer of the starboard cabinet, then it damn well better be there!
