I'll be driving up to Albion CA for the Lost Coast TSCA's messabout this Saturday -- any of you Bay Area forumites interested? We'll be launching from Schooner Flats 10-ish.

The Albion River is low but still quite navigable according to the locals, and they sometimes venture out into the Pacific if conditions are right.

Check out Albion CA on google earth - lovely spot!

According to my IT Dept., you might want to reconsider using Google Earth. The IT staff have requested that none of our people use it since it is a tool for looking into what you do on your computer or something like that. Not good anyway!

Google Earth a tool for looking into what you do on your computer? That I find kind of hard to believe. Various governments and suchlike are not real pleased that Google Earth provides high-quality aerial photographs of sensitive sites, but I have heard nothing about it being a risk to individual computers...

P.S., That looks like a great river for a bit of messing around in boats.

Your IT department sounds interesting -- any proof or just "geek intuition"?

There are the usual internet myths about Google DESKTOP being spyware, but I can't find any similar common myths about Google EARTH -

From one of the myth-buster sites -
----------

6. Google is spyware.

"Spyware is software that reports on your activities or gathers personal information about you and sends it via the Internet to third parties without your knowledge or consent." If you use software like Google Toolbar or Google Desktop, some features may send personal information to Google, but most of them are either turned off by default or require your explicit approval. Google also uses cookies to save your preferences and records queries, clicks, usage patterns to deliver better results. The problem is not that they record it, it's what they do with it. And Google tries to protect it from third parties (like US Government (http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/02/google-responds-to-us-justice.html)).

somewhere around 1964 my dad, brothers, cousin and grandfather launched grampys 24' fishing boat (Glen-L design of some kind) out of Noyo,, that did it. The north coast was imprinted on my soul.

Oops -- it is the Albion river, not the Noyo which is a bit further up the coast at Ft. Bragg. Got my events confused, wondered why they called an event on the Albion "Noyo", but finally got it straightened out after a few emails with the Lost Coast TSCA folks...
