For quick and dirty jobs around the machine shop where a shaft is running on bushings, I try to use compatable metals. Stainless steel shaft and bronze (or brass in some cases) work very well. Would this combination work on a boat? (ie: SS prop shaft and a bronze bushing exposed to salt water (outside) and a stuffing box (inside))

I find the most compatible metal for working with wooden boats to be gold coins ;)

I've used a silver dollar under a mast...does that count?

You need a cutless bearing on the outboard end of the shaft, though it can certainly be housed in a bronze stern bearing. Put a zinc on the SS shaft.

Cutlass bearing has a grooved rubber insert with an outer bronze shell. the bronze metal is only there to help prevent corrosion and give it some structure. this cutlass bearing is pressed into the prop strut which is attached to the hull.
