We have just received the materials to start construction on our 18' Simmons Sea Skiff and I am anxious to get started. Exciting!

In the meantime, I was wondering if anybody had experience or ideas about the best way to add foam flotation to this boat for safety. Dave Carnell has a few good suggestions that he includes in the plans he drew up for the Cape Fear Museum. However, I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this or if Dave has any other ideas on this topic.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. smile.gif

I have not seen the plans for the sealed deck and I am not sure how you are intending to build this boat. In lieu of the bottom frames, the boat could be built with longitual stringers and flotation on the outboard sides and even some foward of the middle section. Depending on the console layout, wire chases will need to be installed before the decking goes down. You will need to do the ribs a number of diferent ways in conjuntion with the decking. You will also need to glass the inside of the bottom .

I don't know your building ability so this is just how we did a 20 footer with a closed deck.

You want to make sure that you don't do an ovekill on the type glass you are using. Also weight is an issue with this boat. Talk to Dave before you venture to far into this modification.
