View Full Version : Antigua Classics regatta
There's a good chance I'm going, great news. I won't be participating, I'll be driving a chartered Swan but it should be great. There's a chance I'll stay for Race week too.

I reallllly hope you've got a camera Gareth......
Emily, I sometimes work for a "pay to play" organisation. I try to keep the commercial aspect out of these posts, it is listed as my homepage. The classics week thing is a charter and we're hoping to rent out the beds one at a time (no takers as yet).
Antigua race week is a few days after the classics week. I've found out that I'm driving the support boat for the Swan 48 for race week again, she's chartered for race week this time, an Aussie team.
In Antigua race week, the boats move between three different bays and the race boats have hotel boats follow them, last year it was an old Moorings 44 catamaran. I kept the beer cold and everyone was happy.I guess this year, I just have to make sure I don't offer them Foster's, it's an American myth that Aussie's drink it.
After that I'm sailing a Swan 46 from Sint Maarten to Newport.
By the way, when i race single handed I find most of my crew like me.....
When I race fully crewed.............. well it's a Jekyll and Hyde thing.

I want to be like you.:D
after nearly 8 hours in the sun on saturdaywith little wind and backmarkers bringing up the wind at the end of the day, My crew may well say that I already am.
Hmm John I went in and edited my post. I'm sometimes less than pleasant when i race (not when I'm coaching funnily enough). I used to sail with a bunch of dinghy sailors in the Irish sea. We did the rent a reputation thing. Jump on a potentially fast boat, astound the owner, then never sail with them again, we were all rude as heck to each other and we're still all good freinds. I gained a lot out of those experiences, if only I could continue the good things and abandon the bad.
On another note, if the Classic week works out. I'll take a camera. I did post pictures of the motor boat, so it's getting better.

Have fun, please share your adventure. I went down years ago and crewed a Swan, we won our class. I reccomend spending some time to acclimate to the tropic climate as racing in the heart and sun is brutal after sitting by the fireplace all winter. That was before the Classic was added. The Swan drivers have a reputation for backing in to the quay as if they were driving a bus. Not for the faint of heart.

You doing the "active nanny" routine? Or just hanging out during the race?

Luke, in this day and age a lot of us refer to ourselves as 'drivers' to differentiate between the guy driving the boat and the owner, who in many cases is not even on the boat. They used to call us 'helmsmen' but now quite a few of these 'helmsmen' are women, and besides that it just sounds cool to call yourself a 'driver'.
Not only do we look like we belong in F1 these days, our titles are similiar :).

Just hanging out. Might do some repairs.
The name. I can't remember, it starts with an A, but it's not the 46 Aphrodite, I sailed her last year.
