View Full Version : Women's voices singing?

This is kind of a strange question :). All of my life I have enjoyed listening to women singing. The cd box in my Jeep is filled right now with nothing but women. The other day I had ordered a couple of Patty Griffin cd's from the internet and while I was opening them one of my daughters asked me what I got. When I showed her she made this little 'face' and said, 'oh. o.k.'.

Is there something strange about a man who wants to hear women sing? I mean, I like to hear certain men sing, but it just so happens that a lot of the music that I like to hear is made by women. Is this some sort of sexual fantasy thing, or am I in danger of trying on my wife's frock the next time she is out of town? Or do I just love the hear the pure voices of people like Alison Krauss or Patty Griffin?

I aught to bop that kid on the noggin' the next time she even looks at me :).

I like listening to Doris Day singing 'Que sera sera' over and over.

I'm right there with ya, Mick.
Back in school I was known as the King of the Chick-Rock. At the time, it seemed perfectly logical; I had access to all other music via my friends' cd collections, so it didn't make sense to spend beer money re-buying that stuff.

It has carried on, however. My commute-music this morning was mostly Indigo Girls and Joni Mitchell (when you arrive at your desk just as she hits that last note of "Chelsea Morning", you know it's gonna be a good day), with only a bit of Sinatra and Dave Matthews in the mix.
Now it's my wife who makes fun of all the girly-music on my ipod, until I remind her that it was probably her opera-trained voice that put the ring on her finger.

Some of us are drawn to the Sirens, I guess.
Not such a bad thing.

I have a collection of Patti Page cd's, she has a web site with her music and products from her farm.

Those girls on the Celtic Woman series sure have some purely beautiful voices.I remember as a kid,Barbara Streisand's voice giving me chill bumps. Martina McBride is another I like to hear sing and can't forget to mention Faith Hill's beautiful sound.I dislike female rock singers though for some reason.

I don't like most female singers, but then there are a handful I am crazy for, mostly the wierd ones. Bjork, Kate Bush, and Chrissie Hynde always make my hair stand on end, every time I hear them. And Christina Aguilera, she can sing.

I was doing some roofing on an addition I built for a client on a Saturday morning and my coworker and I had the radio turned up kinda loud. I guess we played one too many female vocal artist cds 'cause the neighbor came over and yelled at the top of his lungs "What's with the friggin' music? I'm gettin' my period over here." :D

I am partial to Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries and a little known Aussie country singer named Casey Chambers. Then again I also like Son Volt and Counting Crows.

Mickey, I'm a big Patty griffin fan, too. Some other singers you could look out for if you don't know them are Sia, Beth Orton, Kate Rusby, The Hank Dogs, The Be Good Tanyas...

Um, a complex question. I love women singng, in all modes. Classic "Heart." Have you listened to that recently? Mind absofookinglutely blowing. I haven't heard any woman before or since who could belt it like that.

Long history, from Bessie Smith through the rockers. I like Doris Day. She had a sweet, powerful voice. I'm not sure what you are asking.

And, just a word for the other side, I don't much care for high sounds. I'll take a 'cello over a violin any day, and a baritone over a soprano too. My first love-at-first-hearing was (don't laugh) Perry Como, but by the time I was out of my early teens I'd moved on to classical music. When I got to college I heard a recording of Schubert songs by Fischer-Dieskau and spent about 5 years there.

Now it's mostly choral music when it's vocal. And I have improved tolerance for fiddles.

Larry King: [into the camera] This is "News and Views." Here's my two cents, gang. If you only see one film the rest of your life, it should be - "Dante's Peak"!

Yours truly will be in Branson, Missouri next week for an exclusive interview with - Eddie Rabbitt.

Promoter Don King: one class act!

I don't ever remember wearing a hat. Not once. Not ever!

I dined with O. J. Simpson in Los Angeles last week and, take it from me, folks, the Juice is still a hero wherever he goes.

Is there something strange about a man who wants to hear women sing? No, not at all. Anonymous 4 is about as close as one gets to the voices of angels without dying first.

"Ish, your sounding like the old Larry King newspaper column."

Grammar aside(your?)I have no idea what that means.

Just teasing you, Ish. Larry king used to write a column that consisted of random one-line observations. Some were interesting, some were overstatements of the obvious, and some were so far out of left field it was funny. The post above is a transcript of a Norm McDonald Saturday Night Live skit which poked fun at the Larry King column, it gives some of the flavor. The real column could be funnier, without trying to.

All female hard rockers suck except for Patty Smith and, in her own uniquely cliched way, Pat Benetar (makes me smile at the sheer goofyness every time I hear her)

Female folk, Irish/Celtic, jazz, gospel, opera, even county- yep, for sure, but not hard rock.

Kri Te Kanawa singing Strauss' Four Last Songs kills me every time.
Emmy Lou Harris is a goddess
Then there was the Carter family...
Kate Bush is golden (like a sea of honey...)
For all you Canadians out there - how 'bout Jane Siberry? Totally wacked voice but powerful and intriguing in it's own way.

There are some glaring omissions from this thread. No mention of Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell? If I were adding the odd Brit to the list,Dusty Springfield had a notable voice and Julia Fordham is worth a listen.
