My first week of basic training, we were just getting over the shock of it all enough to introduce ourselves to others in our flight. Someone asked me where I was from? I told her, New England.

She nodded solemnly, then asked, "And how long have you been in this country?"

Jami, you story reminds me of one I heard about Nixon before he became president.
An african country had just gained its independence ( I forget which) and Nixon was part of the offical party attending the celebrations.

A tall black guy was next to Nixon who asked him, " well son, what does it feel like to be free?"

His reply was, "I dont know sir, I'm from Alabama."
