I'm sure you've heard the saying "be careful what you ask for" well I asked for plans for a LYS from Old Wharf Dory, and well...now I've really done it! My first hurdle is where to do this, since my garage is on the narrow side 21' x 9'8" I am thinking I could probably cut all the pieces necessary but assembly would be a problem. Then the idea of a tempory structure seemed possible, like a canvas on frame kind of thing. Any suggestions?

Yes. I did well with the carport tent. My only suggestion would be to get the one with the sides on it for when you expect exceptionally bad weather for extended periods. Other than that,I just covered the boat itself with a poly tarp and when the hurricanes went by,I took the poly off the tent so that it didn't end up hanging on the mcdonalds arches up the road and had only a tented polytarp tied on to the hull itself.

If you make all your pieces & parts inside, you should be able to assemble it outside quickly (a day or two) then roll it back inside to continue working on it. I made a few small dollies so that I could roll it in & out of my garage whenever I needed to sand or just needed more space.

It's a fun project, good luck!

Hey Catboat, I just started my 16 foot LYS just over a month ago and so we should be in touch. I work a lot of hours so I have been putting in about 2-3 hours per week for the 5 weeks I have been on the project and so far have my stem, sides, and transom all set. I have butt blocked the sides and fully assembled the transom posts and now need to start putting it together.

I see the hardest aspects of the project coming down to the chine.
How do you plan on cutting a 16 foot piece of wood lengthwise at a 20 degree angle so that the bottom can mount on it properly??????

Also, I can't seem to find anywhere that has a decent 2x6 16 feet long that they could plane to 1 and 1/4 so that it might make the bend. I don't think 2 by will bend without planing it down.

When are you getting started?

Hey Wallace, I haven't started yet, I am building some cabinets for my living room first, and since my garage isn't heated, this is going to be a spring/summer project. As for the chine I would think a few stands and a jig to keep the wood flush to the deck and to the fence would help, it might take a sacrificial piece!
