Does CPES have alcohol as a significant solvent? We are considering paying the small outgauged seams below the water in our YP with CPES first and then 5200. The 5200 sheet says not to clean surfaces with alcohol or bond failure could occur. Any thoughts?

It does not really matter. Once the CPES has kicked off, all the alcohol will have evaporated.

If you were just cleaning a surface with alcohol in prep, would it not have also vaporized? If so, why the warning from 3M?

I don't think so, because generally you put on the 5200 or whatever after it has just been freshly wiped. Whereas with the CPES, you have to wait for it to cure.

Did you see that there are related posts below this..

I am always quite dubious of how much solvent truely evaporates from penetrating epoxies, or more to the point, how long it takes for all the solvents to evap.
Let some cure on a peice of wood, then apply some heat, and you will smell solvent. Let some cure on wood, then give it a sand, and you will smell solvent.

IMHO.

aside from that, I can't imagine 5200 NOT sticking to CPES'd wood.

I've used 5200 on CPES'ed wood. Never had a problem in normal use. CPES is just epoxy with lots of solvents. The cold weather formula has a lot of alcohol.

You are correct. Even epoxy paint primers let off solvents long after. My boat sat primed for a year and once I broke the surface with sandpaper,it smelled of solvents allover again.I would also smell the solvents more on really warm days.

Did "thechemist" go away or get banned? I thought he would have weighed in by now.

Why not just call 3M and ask? Their technical staff should already have that information.
