View Full Version : Locked myself out and I can't find the key.

Joe ( Cold Spring on Hudson )

New place has an old skeleton key for a front door dead-bolt lock. Can't get one made easy so I only had one key. Went the gym then out to dinner and a movie with my daughter tonight. Got home and no key. :( Why is it that you think if you keep rechecking the same pocket it will miraculously appear?

Problem is the key is one of those you need it to lock yourself in and to lock yourself out keys. I got in through a unlocked window, so much for high security. The place is on ground level with a big front porch so it wasn't a big deal to get in. The big problem is there is no way to get Lucky Dog's fat arse out, and believe me he HAD to go out. So you guessed it I lifted his fat lard arse butt up and out the open window. It took about 5 tries to get a good enough grip and prevent him from trying with all his might to not go out the window.

Just spent the better part of an hour making coat wire skeleton keys with no luck. Even tried to remove the whole lock mechanism to no avail. I have no idea how Im going to solve this short of a very old locksmith.

Any ideas ?

Yeah... Don't lock the door in the first place Joe...

It's CSOH...no need...

PH

PS...Call the landlady tomorrow...Tell her that locks that won't let you out without a key are illegal, per fire codes...

Door kinda swings open without the lock, I know its Cold Spring and all, but I kinda like to keep the rain and snow out of the living room

PS...Landlady is in the Bahamas, and NO I didn't ask if I could join her ;)

Pull the hinge pins (if they are not NRP's (non removable pins ), remove door , it will be tight but you should be able to pry it by the hinge barrels . Then remove lockset , buy new lockset , reinstall door , (put hinge pins back in  ) reinstal new lockset.

If it's a old / or full mortice lock some have push buttons on the door edge that control if the door will lock , if it has those just don't push the I wanta be locked button , this is a long shot.

Post a photo of the lockset , I might be able to add more . If it's older there are ways to trick it , some times ;)

Bummer dude , you sure the pins arn't just rusted? Generally NRP's are used only on door that have the hinges on the outside , so a outswinging door , It's not always the case :o but as a general rule thats the case.

Is that a lil nubbin we can see in the key hole slot? Was the end of the key itself square or octagon , if so turn that lil nubbin it may release the backset. If it's not and the hinges are NRP's all my ideas are rubbish, call a locksmith in the AM and get a bigger key ring , and a spare key:D

Poor Lucky's gonna be a second storey man after all this sneakin in and out the window training :D Or he's gonna pee on the carpet:eek:

Ya never lost a key? ;) :D

But ya know I knew how valuable the key was and I knew I was going to loose it. I just knew because it was the only key it was just karma that it had to get lost sooner or later. It was just to precious and invited just so many problems - you just knew it had to go missing.

Misplaced a few , but I don't recall ever being locked out , or having just one key, I have a lot of keys I have no idea whos they are . Ya know remodeling carpenters, get a key and forget to return it :( ,then wonder who the hells key is this

Good luck finding one that works , if you do the old one will jump right out and say "Here I am !":D

Somebody else said you can buy old style keys at hardware stores.I've seen em to,they usually come in a bubble pack of 2 keys.My suggestion would be to call the oldest hardware stores you can find and see if you can track a set down.

Im forever loosin the damned keys  ... keys to the F100 keys to possums car keys to the front door keys to side door keys to back door keys to the shed... give me a key and I'll loose it :o

So what Ive done.. bein as Im gettin a tad smarter as Im ageing... what with me white beard wisdom doth come eh?! ;) :D is to make several copies of all the keys I need and put them on several key rings and leave them in different places... so Ive got these secret stashes around the house and out near the shed and a key in the toolbox (yeah yeah I lock that with another key that well I actually cant find right now  ) But anyways with my membory I tend to ahem... forget where I stashed em!

Sooo your doin well young fella... I mean all you did was loose the keys... its even worse when you not only loose the keys but also forget where the bloody spare sets are! and mate I aint upta climbin through the windows!  soo call me a doddery ol phart see if I care! :p

Take that lock of and buy a new one put that one and bobs yer uncle easy as... heck if shes in the Bahamas do you seriously think shes gonna give a purple rats bum about the door on the apartment? or that you had to change the lock? Not likely... just change it mate I give you all authority :D

Joe, I know that this is a trial for you right now (not to mention poor Lucky Thar Dog), but I love these kinds of posts. Slice-of-life mini-dramas in which nobody gets hurt or harmed and that will, in time, be viewed by all involved as one of those incidents that funny tales are told about. The mental image of Lucky spreadeagled with his paws on the window casing resisting with all his might Joe's efforts to push him through is just killing me right now.

After you get the door open, install a separate deadbolt lockset. Stop using the old one and just use the new one...Make several copies of the new key.

Paul, judging from the lock the hinges might be the lift off type. The pin is fixed on the jam section and the door section has a corresponding hole. The door must be open to be lifted off the pin.

OK long story short is I got the door open :D Yippee
I went to a old hardware store that had every key except the one I needed So I bought a few figuring I could file one. Then I stopped in Home Depot and low and behold they had two of the one I needed. It was however kinda a skimpy version and it did not work at first and Lucky Dog looked like he was about to pop a kidney so I humped him out the window again, but this time I filmed it for you guys (I'm editing now )

So after humping him back through the window (also filmed :D ) I went to work fiddling with the keys I bought and after much jiggling I got the lock to open. I fixed the latch lock that does not require locking but keeps the door closed so I don't have to re-lock the door again. Hey as Phil says I live in Cold Spring :D :D :D

Look out for the film coming soon :D

I banged the hell out of the hinge with a hammer and a scewdriver it did not budge. Ask Phil I'm a bit of a pit-bull if those pins were removable they would have been removed. ;)

Then even if they did remove what then ? remove and replace the hinges as I came and went ? Seems like going out the window would be less work, even for a real estate agent ;)

It was a low window! Why did Joe have to hump the dog out the window, it should have been able to climb out on its own. Must be one of those city slicker dogs, I guess.:D

10 year old, fat, slightly arthritic, lazy, country dog that is getting used to living in the village. ;)

Could be they are NRP's , If you could have gotten the door off you could have either pushed the button on the lockset (some full mortise locks have buttons that control the locking aspects/ features ) or just taken the lock or back set out till you found the key.

BTW have you found the org. key:D , seems about the right time , now that the door open , for it to show up:rolleyes:

Jeesh lighten up rhino hide ;)

Lock set is like 1902 version no buttons to push.
As for lightening up :D I'm Sitting with a harpoon beer and a full price offer to purchase on a house I showed today and an open door, I'm a happy chappy :D But that original key would sure cap the day ;) :D

It would help Lucky's arthritice if you get the excess weight of him. Its also not good for his heart.

Now that I have full controle over his diet and exercise. I have to walk him now since I live in the village and cant just let him out the door so he can go raid the neighbors garbage ;) . Also I feed him special diet dog food and give him glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. He's actually been loosing weight and had way more exercise since my move. But thanks for the concern.

Oh, great!

Now I have this image of poor Lucky Thar Dog spreadeagled against the window casing while Joe is trying to multi-task pushing with one arm and holding his cellphone at arm's length with the other to video the scene!

Oh and the blackberry to post to the WBF :) ROFL

Ah, so this is what a deleted message looks like.

Well, as deleted before, the solution appeared a bit tame - I mean, buying new keys tends to work, but ... . After all I've seen on TV in westerns and krimis, I had thought in America you just opened doors with a gun shot ... ;-)

The video is nice though!

Man, You and Lucky have that in and out the window system DOWN. You could almost live like that, but I'm glad you got the door open.

By the way, for future reference I think those may be loose pin hinges. One end may just be a decorative cap. It can take some work to get the pin started on its way out...

They'd come out if I was there! :) There could be a set screw on the inner barrel side , that holds the pin in , they are called NRP's Non removalable Pins, it's a moot point now but yes those pins will come out the pitbull in Joe is just a weak puppy, :D few 3 and I have about bashed the heck out of the "how to" , if I was rich I'd fly back and pull those pins just to show Joe how to:rolleyes: And to meet the Baldheaded knome , crome dome from the hilltop Hudson river valley, or how ever Dingo with the lingo puts it :D

This thread should be dead , but as we know "It's all about Joe!":D

Lock set is like 1902 version no buttons to push.
;) :D

Joe age of the lock set is not indicative of the button features , here's a lock set carbon dated to the late 1800 / 1900 between 1896 / 1908 , as close as our carbon dating can pin it down at The Girouard institute of lock set technology,:D

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/PEG688/sept17001-1.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/PEG688/sept17002-1.jpg

As you can see this lock set has the push buttons , it also takes two keys , one for the latch or backset as it's called today and one for the deadbolt part of the lock.

As you can see we no longer keep Prince Albert in the can , but we do store his keys in one :D

As a purveyor of older homes you could "wow" potential clients with this sort of worthless knowledge :)

We now return you to the normal bilge rhetoric:rolleyes: :D

Joe never doubted your lock lacked buttons , I was just pointing out that some do. At the time , way back yesterday, when you where locked out I had "Hopes" that your lock may have had some controlling buttons.

If you could have gotten the door off by pulling the hinge pins we / you coulda been golden. It was a long shot as I think I mentioned , we all know more about old locks now than 24 hrs' ago.

Hi to Tess from a boatie boat:) Nice video BTW. My own video what a honor!:D

Hmmm, would you be willing to part with that set?

Humm never thought of that! The dead bolt key is missing , I'm pretty sure and there is no shaft nor knobs , and one exterior excussion is missing , other wise she cherry:D

I have no idea what it worth , and it was my grandfather's stash so I'm sort of connected to it in some weird way.

What ya give for it knowing all that? And I think more importantly to me would you be using it on your own place or fixing it up for resale ?? I may have tipped my hand here , to damned honest:(

Edited to add:

Acutually it has both the interior and exterior excussion , it was made by ,

Incomplete, it's a tough call. A missing escutcheon plate diminishes value and is most valuable to someone with parts or machining ability.

never throw them out.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Escutcheon now there's a word a guys got to memorize, I never can get close enough for spell check to find it:rolleyes: :D

I do have both , I edited my post . No knobs and shafts and no deadbolt key , I'll recheck the ones in the Prince Albert can tomorrow.

I know I'll never use it , heck I've had it in the twenty year draw for 25 years :D

It is a very nice lock , lots of engraving etc on the escutcheons ;) which look to be brass. They don't makum like that any more.

PM me, if your interested, we might be able to work something out. Wouldn't wanta get Scotted for making a sale on forum ;)

Sorry I did not mention that I had raced back to the gym after the movies with Tess and checked as well as checked the front desk. No one knew about a key. But I did check ;)

To be honest I was running out so fast that the guy tuned around after picking it up and I was gone. He had been holding on to it cause he sees me a lot.

Anyway I'm happy he remembered to come up to me today ;)

There's a great Sufi wisdom story I'll try to recall.

A man has lost his key, and he's searching around outside his door. A friend comes along and asks,

-What's up, what are you looking for? The man explains, and the friend takes up the search. After maybe ten minutes, after searching pretty well, the friend asks,

-Where did you last have this key?

-Oh, last time I had it was inside the house.

-Well, what are we doing looking out here?

-The light is better out here.
