View Full Version : Starting a new boat, finally......

11-09-2003, 07:09 PM
Decided to build Ken Hankinson's Flats Flyer a year of so ago. Got the plans for my birthday this year, and after studying them for the last 2mos, I'm finally underway.

Ken's design....

Looking over the frames plan....

Half-plan laid on 1/4" luan for full size tamplates....

I used a sharpened awl to mark keel, chine, & sheer....

Using a 3/8" mahogany batten to fair bottom curve....

Who would want boat plans for your birthday. I want that outbuilding you are working in!!!

Tell me how best to phrase it. Perhaps, "Honey, I was thinking we should plan ahead for when your folks move in with us (groan!) and build a shelter for them now. In the interim I could use it... to store some... things, yea things in - and who knows, maybe make something out there... build you that end table you always wanted or help with the scout troop project... Hey, who knows maybe, just maybe I could use it for something... like oh, I don't know... an assembly project of some such...

Apparently, Casey's ruse was to tell her that he needed a shed to store his fishing gear .......

She told me the shed keeps him out of her hair. Thats a good line to start with, along with a tool implement shed for the wommans gardening tools. Look to the right of the trailer front. Get here on your side, before you bring up the boat plans. He failed to tell you part of the fishing rods and the yellow boat, behind him, belong to her, now, either. tongue.gif

Thats a good line to start with, along with a tool implement shed for the wommans gardening tools. Yup. Half the stuff in there is hers. :(

I got the barn by building my last boat in the garage. She got so tired of my mess, she suggested the barn. It is my home-away-from- home. :D

Donn, I have rods/reels that I've never even used. I just can't help myself. ;)

Casey, isn't that little yellow boat a phantom that you built off of Jaques Merten's plans?

Yes, Chad. I finished it a year and a half ago. It will probably take me 18mos or so to build this one.
