Read this article in the Wash. Post this morning... Pi$$es me off.

Child, 2, Is Killed Riding On ATV
A 2-year-old boy was killed in Charles County over the weekend when the child-size all-terrain vehicle he was operating overturned on him, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said the boy was operating a Baja Wilderness 50 four-wheeler, which is designed for children 6 to 12 years old and equipped with a remote cutoff switch. When the boy's mother turned the ATV off by the remote, the vehicle stopped but the front wheels turned, causing it to overturn on the boy, sheriff's deputies said. He was wearing a helmet.

The boy, the child of a couple who live near La Plata, was taken by ambulance to Civista Medical Center in La Plata, then taken by a helicopter to Children's Hospital in Washington, where he was pronounced dead at 4:21 p.m. Saturday. His parents were not charged with a crime, the sheriff's office said.

A family member declined to speak to a reporter yesterday. Three neighbors described them as a nice couple; one said they were responsible parents who were devastated by the accident.

In 2005, there were 57 ATV-related deaths of children younger than 12 years old, according to figures released Dec. 6 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. It did not report how many were on child-size vehicles.

For children younger than 16, the number rose to 120. An estimated 40,400 people younger than 16 were treated in emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries, the commission said.

In 2005, there were an estimated 136,700 ATV-related injuries. There were also 467 ATV-related deaths, although a safety advocacy group says that number will probably increase as more reports come in to the safety commission.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute, an industry-sponsored group and a division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, said the company that made the ATV, Baja Motorsports, is not a member. Efforts to reach Baja Motorsports were unsuccessful yesterday.

According to the company's Web site, the Wilderness 50 model is designed for operators age 6 and older with "proper adult supervision." The chassis weighs 142 pounds, and the ATV is powered by a 49-cubic centimeter, four-stroke engine.

The institute recommends that children younger than 6 not operate ATVs and sets standards based on the age of riders. For riders 6 to 11, the group says, ATVs shouldn't be allowed to travel more than 15 mph and should be delivered to customers with the speed adjusted so it can't top 10 mph. Standards for ages 12 to 15 are slightly less stringent.

The group also says that ultimately parents must decide if their children are of sufficient size and maturity to ride the vehicles.

To date, it said, only North Carolina has adopted the standards.

Sue DeLoretto-Rabe, co-founder of Concerned Families for ATV Safety, whose son Kyle, 10, was killed on an ATV, said that North Carolina has the strictest laws and that she would like to see stricter laws in other states.

I think part of this is todays parents so want their kids to have all the toys they want.In the parents minds their being the "perfect parrent" by trying to make sure the kid has what the other kids have.I believe parents today also push their kids too hard, they have to advance faster,go farther,do more,to match or exceed what the other kids do.Its a race that sometimes in in injury or death, a shame.

it fits with the thread in boats misc on speed boat tragedy...someone should do a study on how much government revenue would drop (taxes, licensing fees and the like) if no one under 18 operated a motor vehicle...the fox is in charge of the hen house

Two- age two?? Nobody in their right mind should let a two year old operate anything motorized. There is no excusing these parents- they should be procecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

My boss's kid is about that age.Every move that kid makes has to have an educational theme. He cant just play, he has to be learning something. They are completely caught up in making sure the kid is the brightest, most educated, most worldly, most everything.I feel for the kid, he's never allowed to just be a kid.
These parents were pushing that young child to advance too fast .And your right they should be called on the carpet for it.

Well then I SUCK at being a parent...
b/c I don't have WI-FI, (Mom's BF has it!)
I haven't let Daughter unit get her learners permit yet.
I haven't gotten another car for her to drive WHEN she does...
I didn't let Son unit go in to town the other day to skateboard at the shopping center.
I won't buy everything they want, not even half of what they want.
I make them sit at the table when I eat dinner whether they eat what I fix or not.
They damn sight better wear their helmets biking (already had a concussion each, one w/ helmet, one w/o!)
I want to SEE their homework!!
I won't buy $90 sneakers that will be outgrown in 4 months... I put up half though if they want to spend THEIR $$$!
I could go on and on about all the ways I'm MEAN and AWFUL...

Told my daughter that in 30 years I was going to come and visit and rag on her for all the stuff she's giving me crap for now...see how she likes it then...

and won't it be great when they start marketing PWC for 6-12 year olds!

I don't know if this had anything to do with the tragedy at hand, but I've noticed that SOME of my friends who have small kids seem to be in a big rush for the kids to grow up and engage in adult activities so that they can return to some semblance of pre-parental life themselves.
The sooner we get the kid on an ATV, the sooner we can go riding on weekends like we did before we had kids.

Yep, my kids didnt grow up assuming mommy and daddy would buy them whatever the lastest gadgit was either.Too much pushing to advance tied in with not enough common sense.Sometimes I watch parents now days and wonder what their thinking.

We've got 6 and 8 year old boys.

I cannot imagine them riding anything that was not powered with their own feet when they were 2 or 3 years old, or even now. They are good, smart, agile kids, but still too likely to make a small mistake with huge consequences.

We're in no hurry to have them "grow up," but they sure aren't coddled and sheltered either. Expose them to new things, but teach them how to do it safe and to exercise good judgement.

The youngest wanted roller blades and a skateboard. We told him could get those when he learned to ride a two-wheeler without the training wheels.

Two summers ago (they were 4 and 7) we put them in our 11 foot solo canoe together by themselves while we paddled alongside in the 17 footer. They had a great time.

Sailing our boat, we have "Daddy overboard" drills, where I throw a cushion overboard and sit back while they try to get the boat back to the cushion.

Camping, hiking, fishing. It's all good. But an ATV for a 6 year old? I don't believe it could ever be a good idea.

That's a great idea Brian...I think we too often forget that the kids might have to save us too..

Kinda reminds me of the news story a few years back about the grandfather who decided taking his 2 Y/O grandkid for a ride on the hood of the lawn tractor while he was mowing the lawn was a good idea. That was not only very sad, but also very messy...
