I am about to paint my boat using the “roll and tip” method. Does anyone have any advice on what kind of roller to use. Also, I read somewhere that you could use a foam brush to ‘tip off” with. Has anyone ever done this before or would you recommend a good quality brush? I am using Pettit Gloss White Enamel.

Thanks
Huey

Funny I was just doing some roll and tip with my brightwork. I use generic foam brushes and a foam roller (Whizz is a popular brand name). It's a good way to get a heavy coat on.

I just painted my dinghy using this method. For my tipping brush, I tried both an expensive bristle brush and a cheap foam brush. I had much better results with the el cheapo foam brush. I bought a big bag of them and just tossed them when a painting session was over.

As for the roller, I used an inexpensive 6" foam roller cover from my local big box store. It worked great. But, I was using a different paint than your project, so your findings may differ.

The secret is a very light (lighter than you would think) touch on the brush. Holding it with two fingers worked for me.

There a about 50 posts on your question here: "Topic: Success is in the details...rolling and tipping." (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012091)
