Today the local library hosted a young boatbuilder who brought in his beautiful example of an Adirondack Guideboat. The discussion focused on its construction, features and the design's history. This fellow is a graduate of The Landing School, spent time in the field, and continued on to become a teacher (pay the bills).
His goal is to offer courses at his family's farm here in Bethlehem, CT, and a number of people approached him after the open session to chat about courses they'd like to take. One person spoke to him about a proposed education outreach project he's involved in that uses boats as a method of reaching at risk kids. So, who knows, I may have a place I can take a course or two and drop in on weekends to see what's underway. He is currently restoring a 1904 canvas covered canoe for a client.
I'll pass along any further info for those in this area of NW CT or eastern NY who might be interested. Also, feel free to contact me privately if you'd like to have your name added to an email list regarding the status of his course offerings.
