View Full Version : The Right Green
Any recommendations for a good bottom paint in a classic green color? I've used Interlux Bottomkote ACT in the past, but the green color isn't very deep and I see it on a lot of modern powerboats. I have also used Kirby's bottom paint, but it's kind of a dark moss green--closer, but still not right.
I'm wooding the teak hull of my 35-foot yawl this winter. Boat is on the Chesapeake Bay; I haul every spring for maintenance. I'm thinking ablative but am open to suggestions.
Isn't there a standard out there for classic green bottoms??
Thanks.

I really like Kirby's Blind Green. In the runabout world, Interlux Brightside Sea Green seems to be the most widely used bottom paint. (for boats in the water for no more than 7 days at a time)

I used a very salty traditional copper green bottom paint for the skiff. Is this the look you are looking for?

I think what I have in mind is a deeper color, more like a rich kelly green. The Bottomkote ACT I have used starts out like yours, Joe, but lightens up very quickly. I saw a good, deep teal green color in a photo on the Jamestown Distributors catalog cover once, but they were not able to track it down for me.
Didn't the Concordia Yawls traditionally have green bottoms? Maybe I'll ask the Concordia company for some hints. Thanks all.

I have some Kirby Bronze Green, which is a very dark green, it looks almost black until the light hits it just right. But I'm not sure if it's technically a bottom coat. At any rate, it's not an antifouling paint.

Bark, my experience is with various green Pettit antifouling paints, and they change color significantly as the copper leaches. I have used Unepoxy Plus, which goes on as a fairly deep teal, but once it has leached for awhile becomes quite light.

Kirby's bottom paint is the best green I've found. But if it's not just what you are looking for, then I suggest you call George Kirby and ask him if he can modify the color to suit your liking.

For a incredible beautiful green I use Top-Lac Donegal green. It goes on like liquid mercury and is such a rich beautiful green it makes this Irishman's eyes weepy :D But it is not an antifouling bottom paint.

Yeah, that Toplac Donegal green looks like what I'm talking about. Too bad it's not antifouling. Seems like I asked George Kirby about a different green antifouling a few years back, but didn't have much luck. I'll have to revisit that one with him.

I once saw someone mix actual copper powder into epoxy and produce this amazing copper bottom that may turn green. I know its not green when you apply it but man did it look classy all shimmering copper like that and hard as hell. If I ever do a real boat I want a bottom like that. Homer Drool tongue.gif
Edited to add I found a site where they did exactly that. not such great photos, he obviously doesn't have a Leica ;) , but informative.

This guy obviously thinks the copper bottom is beautyful enough to kiss smile.gif

No luck with Kirby's, I'm afraid. They can possibly tint the color darker, but can't brighten it up. I really like their Irish Green #38 but, alas, not an option in bottom paint. I emailed Concordia for input, but didn't hear back. Still looking ...
