On Projects:

Planning Perception Patience

I am posting this personal unsolicited treatise so that I may share with those so interested my personal views on the matters listed in the title.

It is so easy for us to become overly enthused at the prospect of the building or rebuilding of a boat. There is truly something romantic about boats and boatbuilding especially wooden boats. I like to think that the romance and the satisfaction of a job well done is what has kept me involved with wooden boats for these many years. It sure as hell wasn't the money!

I do think that it is crucial for those so inclined to keep focused. Think carefully and long about that which you are about to undertake. It will consume untold hours, be a possible drain on your finances and relationships with family/significant others .

Once the decision is made, Planning becomes the next step. Get out that pad of yellow legal sized paper and start listing what you have and what you 'think' you will need. Notice the way 'think' is highlighted? There is a good reason for that. One never knows down to the gnats arse just what really will be needed! There is always something that either is forgotten in that first blush of zeal or rears its head as the project unfolds. For those who have not done this work before be advised that no matter the method or technique the learning curve working alone without a mentor is steep, albiet definitely doable.

Perception, that is the interpretation of a thing based on one's understanding of that thing, is again crucial to the success of your project.
It will change somewhat as you move along and that is good provided you don't loose focus of the original reasoning for engaging in your project.

Patience ah Patience, that is so important, so crucial, so primary to the success of your project. Above all, that is what is most needed. Some steps will just flow along whilst others will seem to take forever. It was always like that when a new builds launching date was almost upon us. A thousand piddly little things would rear their heads and the hours would drag on til one imagined that the damn thing would never hit the water but, it did and, on time too. Oh not everything was ready for sea but almost.

Take your time, take a break now and then to smell the ocean or flowers or whatever but do take that break. Remember this for most is an Avocation don't turn it into shoveling ****e against the tide.
