Tess is in an after school thing called Desitination Imagination and her team's project is to build and explore aircraft and flight. So yesterday we went on a field trip to look at one of the biggest ones, a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy transport plane. It was very cool.

It was one little girls birthday so we sat her in the pilot seat and all sung Happy Birthday to her.

Bump cause I saw the invisible man on ;)

Joe, when my daughter was studying flight, she was 7. I took her flying, the local airport (Sanford Maine) had a deal with Cessna, it cost $60. (others will jump in to explain it, i think it's available everywhere) Leah flew the plane under the tutelage of an instructor, who really knew how to hand over. Leah flew it over our house and within 50' of the landing strip. He showed her how to line up the lights and etcetera.
Her teacher said that when she showed the pictures, she said "Do you think I look a little like Amelia Earhart".
She was the only kid in her class to fly, even though I was one of the lower income parents at the time.
Highly reccomended.

I think I read somewhere the Russians are reactivating this beast for a new role.

There was a Discovery TV special on that Russian plane... as I recall, it sat in mothballs for 10 years or so, until some entrepeneurs decided to buy it, refurbish it, and put it back into the air.... quite impressive! If I could only remember the model number, there are undoubtedly many websites that tell the story.
Edited to add: Here it is! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_An-225

I've seen one of those Russians. It landed in Bangor in January of 2001, as Katey and I were headed back to Tacoma after a visit. Bangor has a 3 mile runway, so it can handle anything.
It's interesting that, according to Wikipedia, this was several months before it received it's commercial certification.

The C5,
from Wikipedia
The Galaxy has 12 internal wing tanks with a total capacity of 51,150 US gallons (193,620 L) of fuel. A full fuel load weighs 332,500 lb (150,819 kg). A C-5 with a cargo load of 270,000 lb (122,000 kg) can fly 2,150 nautical miles (4,000 km), offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles
or
166 TONS of fuel and
135 TON payload.
and still fly 2,650 nautical miles.

That's a nice story. I missed it earler... guess we cross posted.
Just 'tween us, if you daughter ever desires to fly, I hope she aspires to a better pilot than Earhart. The woman was lucky to live as long as she did.

Neat. I always find it interesting to watch a C-5 go by. They're so big compared to their actual airspeed that they look almost like they're floating; and they make that distinctive whistle that sounds like nothing else in the sky.
