I have a varnishing question that I hope someone can help me with. I'm along time admirer of wooden boats and a subscriber to the magazine, but I must admit my question relates to my new project boat which is f****glass: a 1971 Boston Whaler Outrage. Hopefully someone will respond anyway!
The boat has a teak center console that I want to varnish. It was originally oiled teak, but I prefer the look of varnish. Each plank on the console (and also on a deck hatch) are separated by a white line of what appears to be some type of caulk. My question: is it possible to varnish over these caulk lines?
Another question: the prior owner slapped a bunch of Cetol on everything. How do I remove this stuff from the teak and the caulk lines without damaging either?
Thanks
John
