Wasn't there someone running for the House as a "Pirate"?

I don't know about a pirate.. But Captain Hook came in second. Rumor has it, his clock ran out.

Kinky Friedman lost his bid for Governor of Texas; he's the closest I know of.

In Maine we had a candidate for governor who legally changed his name to:Phillip Morris Na-Pier, The People's Hero. He tried to get his whole name placed on the ballot, but the Elections Commission said it was too long, so all he got was Phillip Morris Napier. He was representing the Pissed Off People's Party.

He got somewhere around 2800 votes, a little less than 2%. He had some interesting ideas about saving money. A few years back the state closed down the old prison and built a new one. He sent the governor a down payment of $500.00 and said he'd buy the place for $10,000 rather than have the state pay $3,000,000 to tear the old one down. The governor sent his deposit back.

He was planning to start a nudist colony in the old building..

wasn't a dead person elected as well.....that's rough being beaten by the dead...

(i know--- died after nomination-- but that doesn't sound as good)
