Suit: Burger King served pot burgers to cops
POSTED: 2:33 p.m. EST, November 7, 2006
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) -- Two police officers sued Burger King Corp., claiming they were served hamburgers that had been sprinkled with marijuana.
The lawsuit says Mark Landavazo and Henry Gabaldon, officers for the Isleta Pueblo tribal police, were in uniform and riding in a marked patrol car when they bought meals at the drive-through lane October 8 of a Burger King restaurant in Los Lunas, New Mexico.
The officers ate about half of their burgers before discovering marijuana on the meat, the lawsuit said. They used a field test kit to confirm the substance was pot, then went to a hospital for medical evaluations.
"It gives a whole new meaning to the word 'Whopper,"' the officers' attorney, Sam Bregman, said Monday.
"The idea that these hoodlums would put marijuana into a hamburger and therefore attempt to impair law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs is outrageous."
Three Burger King employees were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and aggravated battery on an officer, a felony. They later were indicted.
The lawsuit, filed Friday in Bernalillo County, alleges personal injury, negligence, battery and violation of fair practices. It seeks unspecified damages along with legal costs.
Officials at Miami-based Burger King declined to comment, citing a company policy against discussing pending litigation.

I heard this on the radio this morning. I wouldn't get conspiratorial about it, the employees who did it were easily identified. A law suit, a felony charge of assault on a cop, seems a bit much.

I'd say these cops were lucky, mostly when you hear of a fastfood chain employee embellishing a policeman's food, its with a bodily function.

"Have it your way." ~ Burger King
Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
. A law suit, a felony charge of assault on a cop, seems a bit much.
Don't agree with you here. I would charge them with every thing I could.

Chad,
The kid who did this should be fired, and chastised legally, but felony assault on a policeman is a very serious charge, and seems a bit rich for a bad prank.

All the times I've been to burger king, no one has ever impaired ME from doing my job (whatever that is...)
Jack, lacing a burger is a very serious charge. I would throw the book at them.

Went to the hospital for medical evaluations? LOL! What WEENIES!
I think going to the doctor was the right thing to do. Get it documented and make sure there wasn't anything more serious in there. That not only gives you evidence agaisn't the perps, but also protects the cops.

Maybe it's my age showing, but in the world I grew up in here's what would have happened. The cops would have gone back to the restaurant, arrested the kid(s), taken away his pot, taken him down to the station, read him a bit of the riot act, scared the bejesus out of him, and let him go with stern admontions to straighten up.
All this stuff about testing the burgers for other contaminents and going to the hostpital to document everything and law suits is really weird. Apologies to the strict law and order folk, but it's weird.

Jack , it has to be done that way now.And I can tell you from experience that kids dont scare the way they used to when we were young.A kid now days will quote the law to the cop and wont back down. The day of the "bad guy cop" scaring a kid straight making him/her cry dont apply now.I've seen kids stand their ground and refuse to budge, not showing any fear at all.It seems to be the norm now.
