View Full Version : spiling
What is the diffence between 'spiling' and lofting? In reading the article in the lastest issue of WB, I see the definition of spiling as determining shape of a plank. What then is lofting?

Lofting is drawing the boat full size (usually). One does this for several reasons: to get the shape of the building mold, to check the information in the plans for erors, and to determine the shape of most pieces (other than planking).

Look at your lines drawing in the plans. Simply put, lofting is re-creating the profile and section views, full size, so that you can make accurate patterns and templates for shaping the molds and backbone timbers.
Speaking of which, have you been sailing lately Art...havent seen any new pix of Melinda in a while :D And what did you ever do about that fore and aft trim issue?

Seems like you should take a trip to Mystic, nothing like seeing first hand to understand. They are not busy this time of year and would be real happy to answer any questions you might have.

Have you read Jim Hillman's excellent FAQ for this particular forum?
Several links to sites explaining the how to's.
Let us all get in the habit of referring folks with similar questions to Jim's fine FAQ.
Seems like that is what it was meant for.

It's COLD, Tim... and, yes. She's still a little heavy by the stern, I'll fix it...

No one seems to have explained what spiling is smile.gif
Spiling is shaping a plank so that it fits up against it's neighbour without any gaps, or in the case of shutter or replacement planks, both it's neighbours.
It's a dark art smile.gif
Thanks to all of you.
If I have this correct, the basic difference is simply that spiling is about shaping each individual plank as it is about to be cut, while lofting has to do more with transposing a small to a 'full' scale.

Let's put it another way... You loft to determine the shape of the designer's boat. You spile to determine the shape of the next plank that has to fit onto YOUR boat.

Lofting will yield a full sized drawing of how the disigner and you want the parts to be shaped like. The first fairing operation is usually done here.
Spiling will yield a full sized drawing of what the next piece needs to be to be to fit.
This doesn't imply that the previous piece is wrong, just that it almost certainly doesn't lie where and how it is shown in the lofting.

Having taken a few WB classes and read a lot, I think the recent WB spiling article does a great job of explaining this.
I know what spiling is but not a FAQ. Who is this Jim and how do I get hold of his article?
