I'm sure this story has been told many times.....

Since a major refit fifteen years ago, I've enjoyed the Nautilus immensely but for the past few years other pursuits have limited my time on the water. Time passes and.... I'm looking for a new curator for this one boat museum. One comes forth, and their survey shows several soft planks - one rotted from years under refer sweat, a punky butt block (omigod, the plank ends too, maybe?) and soft wood in the stem and horn timber. Plus an extensive list of -relatively- minor recommended items.

Any change of venue and financial arrangement for this musem would have to take into consideration the problems or be contingent on repairs. Since one of the things I've enjoyed during my stewardship was the original refit, I've decided to go ahead with the next one at once over an extended haulout; and while I'm at it, have some fun in the woodshop and down below upgrading the interior.

To start, and since it could be done at the dock, I decided to explore the soft wood at the top of the dock. It turned out that it was a graving piece at the very tip that was 'not very good wood' (yellow cedar, we think) but not rotten.

So, in a couple weeks Associated takes her to a covered, unpaved, bay of a pole barn on Guemes Island to start on the planks and horn timber exploratory.

Here's a photo of the stem under the knife.

Comments, tips, commiseration welcomed. As time permits, I plan on documenting the project on a web site; I'll post a link here when that happens.
