Y'all should know this is Roger's favorite yard because he can spit on it from his house, and it houses much of his personal collection.;)

I'm proud to say I have a fledgling grove of Bamboo, dug from this very yard, flourishing in my garden.

Dave Southard, the proprietor of this wonderfull yard passed away last night in his sleep. He was just a few weeks shy of his 96th birthday.

Donn, I am happy to see that there are wooden sailboats out east. Here in Seaford there are none that I know of. Also no boatyards like out east. thanks for showing the pictures Tom Mac

Gracious, Tom. That yard is only a hop-skip-and-a-jump from you. I'm in Amityville, and there are wooden sailboats here. Holzbt, who posted those pics, is just another few miles east, in Babylon, where Southard's yard is. Holzbt has probably a dozen+ wooden sailboats in his backyard, and who knows how many parked at Southards.

My MacKenzie passed by him too. Those are some wonderful boats and RIP Dave. Looks like he left a nice legacy and hopefully someone will continue it.

Wow! So near, I sail pass Amityvile all the time, that bay is great for sailing. I made have seen you. There use to be some yards in Amityville, The Ketchams. One build the Seaford skiffs, and the other builded the Narrsaaget sorry I spell it wrong, I hope you know what I am talking about. Are they still there? Thanks Tom Mac

Paul Ketcham's yard was still just east of the river, last time I checked. He did some work on my boat a few years back. He has one of the last marine railways in the area.

No pics, but I like Herbie's in Copaigue. You settle bills in his kitchen over a drink( regardless what time of day). And if you don't "give him trouble" the price is less. Brought my buddy there, he gave Herbie a good bottle of vodka, we had shots at 10am, then launched the boat.

Donn, Thanks, About 18 years ago, I bought a seaford skiff from a guy named Buddy Toomey, I was going to use it has a rowing boat, I was going to rib out the center board, and put in a rowing machine. Some guy who had a seaford skiff, said try sailing before doing any changes. Ok I said, Wow! I had a great time sailing all over the bay. But I had very bad knees, the skiff had a small cockpit, and as much as i like it, It was rough, One day up in Maine, in a boat show, I saw a 12and half, Wow that is one wide boat. got some blueprints from wooden boat. Builded and sail it , So when you are out there stop and we have a tot Thanks Tom Mac

Here's the railway from 1947. It's still there, but the fisheries building of the University of Washington would be in the background and one of their shop buildings where the tree is. Wonder what boat that one went in?
