I posted something on deck beams a few days ago...thanks to those who responded.
There is 8/4 white oak locally in suitable lengths to get what I need for the short beams. Now my problem deepens. The strong beams need to be replaced as well. They are oak and measure 9/4 x4" and are just under 12' shelf to shelf. I've been told I should go back with 9/4, but the only thing I have found locally in 9/4 is a piece of mahogany. It's expensive but would work.
My question I guess boils down to this....would there really be a significant difference structuraly if I used 8/4 for these beams with this span?
This is probably not a really big deal....I can get both pieces out of the one piece of mahogany for a total cost of about $115 compared to maybe $70 for 8/4 white oak if I can find a piece long enough.
Input is appreciated.
