I would like to order paint strainers to use with Epifanes varnish, but do not know which ones.

They come in four sizes: 90, 130, 190 en 280 micron.

Furthermore, there are new all plastic ones from Colad. More expensive. but I will not use hundreds of them. Are these any good?

Well, I read the Wittman book and she was very much against using pantyhose.
So I should give that a try first?

Did she explain why?
I have had good luck with panty hose....

I have the book here.... Something like that only men would advise to use a stocking...
"conducting such a delicate operation with such an unwieldy garment is a one way ticket to the funnyfarm"

My interpretation of the latter was: dont do it.

Use only the toes.. not hard..
I am interested in the reasons though as I have had good luck with panty hose.. Unwildy.. yes, I guess that would be true if you used the entire pair at once.... that would make little if any sense....

See what others think.. I'm just a troll....

BTW, "pantyhose" is the traditional answer on this forum, but I'm sure that any commercial varnish filter would be fine.

If you can only use the toes, there are only two per stocking....
These strainers cost around 0.10$ a piece.
So which size guys? Or is this xxx microns only relevant if you do not want to block your expensive spraygun?

I'm at a loss as to what size... Gonna have to troll elsewhere.. the hose has worked for me... best I can offer..... Good luck, let us know. I will always need a can of varnish near at hand regardless as to what boat I buy to replace Uncas...
New ideas are always appreciated...

In fact.. I am seriously looking at this product I saw at the WBS.. not varnish but Crabcoat...

Conical strainers are only 30 cents each here if purchased individually. The paper ones with either a nylon mesh or a cotton mesh (although cotton isn't common now). "How fine?" Fine enough to catch every artefact but not so fine that thicker paint wont go through it.

Panty hose doesn't work at all well (for me) because;

Conical strainers sit upright in the vessel. They do not slump under the weight of the paint like pantyhose does. They are not a mess to clean up like pantyhose is. They are much faster to use than panty hose because they do stay rigid. They contain the drips to only the area of the gauze windows, unlike pantyhose that contains little. If they start to clog-up because of a build up of artefacts you can move the artefacts away from the gauze because the cone is rigid unlike pantyhose. Finally, they have small tabs on them so that they can be lifted after decantering the paint ... they are the only way to go. The only problem that I've found is that some of the gauze can be over glued at times.

If you do use pantyhose you need to use several layers at once, because it slumps so badly, trying to contain it is a real hassel, so you end up using far more pantyhose than your wife or girlfriend thinks.

The brand of paint strainer that I use is 'Body Shop' ... and they are only 30 cents each. They are one of the better value professional products on the market, for painters even when they are not purchased in bulk.

I've had them too fine though I don't know the micron size. If 90 is 9/10 of a mm, I'd go with 130. A selection wouldn't be much of a waste, then you could report on what worked.

No, 90 microns = 0.000090m = 0.09 mm

I was looking at these:

If you buy a package you get a support ring and a stand for free.

I have been a painter since 1970. We always used the wifes old pantyhose to strain paint. Use more than just the toes. Tie a knot in one end and cut off what you need. Cutout any runs, holes etc.

The waist portion is good for straining 5 gallon buckets.
