Ok, I bought the plans at the Maine Boatbuilder's Show. Thistle is Harry Bryan's pedal powered, fin driven 12'decked canoe. I'm building with black locust frames and cedar decking and bottom. Bulkheads are two layers of 1/4" cedar glued together. So far the frames are mounted to the building platform and the bottom is attached and the beveling is almost ready for the first plank. Planks are lapstrake, fastened with screws, rivets and clench nails. No plywood. I'll put a few pics here, then a link to the album. http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b7cc24b3127ccec29e411cb8bb00000010O00AbNnLhizaOW IPbz4S/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

I keep getting those spots on my pics, but the lens is clean. This is a borrowed digital camera. What's up? was there some kind of condensation at some point? How would I fix that?

Seems a big crew for a canoe, or are they the peddlers(?) Nice workshop.
Thad...the kids and pooch are adorable...love the lime green sox!
The spots in the pics are most likely caused by dust in the air, reflecting the camera's flash back to the CCD or CMOS. The fact that they are not always in the same location indicates that it isn't condensation spots inside the camera.
The Thistle might take a light passenger but Steven knows he'll have to make one for each of them if he can't get them to make their own.

Steven, I am really interested in this particular boat. Where did you source the plans and how much? What do you think of the plans? Is there a web site having any more info? Have you any prior experiece with fin drive?

First, they aren't all mine. If you go to the album you'll see the caption for that picture - son, nephew, two daughters, friend, niece. And Russel Stover is a chocolate Lab, not a black Lab.
But anyway, thanks for your kind comments. smile.gif
Henri, I bought the plans at the Maine Boatbuilders Show from Harry Bryan himself. That's one nice thing about the show, the builders are there with their boats - not sales reps. I first saw the fin powered boat at the Woodenboat show in Southwest Harbor about five years ago. My friend Norm was storing some cedar for a future boatbuilding project in my garage when he passed away, so I wanted to use the cedar for a boat in his memory. Then the day of the boat show I recieved $50 in the mail from my inlaws for my birthday. I was at Harry Bryans booth admiring his boats when I realized that his design would be a perfect fit for the wood in the garage. And the plans cost exactly $50. Here is a shot of one page:

The plans are very nice, they come with a complete set of building instructions and full size patterns for frames, bulkheads, etc.
And Harry said to call him if I had any questions.
So far the plans and instructions have been enough. If all goes well you can all see the finished boat at the Woodenboat Show in Rockland in July.
Shane - did you ever see the pictures from the Maine Boatbuilders Show? We were thinking (and talking) of you that day. (That was the day you went into the hospital) Very glad to have you back. The pics are in Misc somewhere.
The bevel on the bottom is finished and I just resawed the cedar for the planking this afternoon after work. I hope to have more progress to show by the end of the weekend.

Steven,
Nice project. I saw the Thistle in action at the Wooden Boat show in Mystic a few years back. It moved right along. When you've had enough pedaling, you can paddle. Its similar in design and construction to the Fiddlehead.
Keep the pictures coming and let me know if you have trouble hanging that tricky garboard. smile.gif

I'm bumping this to the top because I fixed the broken picture links from the big Imagestation debacle.
