Last night I was given a stat...

The number of days our congress has been in session ( through yesterday ) this year 94

94 days.... N wonder nothing gets done.. Lets see, congressmen make what 165,000/year. Well, 94 days in session comes out to 1800/day.. not bad...

Even if I throw in 60 for being available in their home districts, the number is not very impressive.

Lets see, Thanksgiving break, followed by Christmas break followed by winter break, Easter break, spring break, summer break, fall break...
I wouldn't be surprised about the number given last night as being close to correct.

No. But then again, the less time they spend "at work" the less damage they can do.

Yup.. and Bush took advantage of this recently by nominating an individual who was found unqualified by the Senate to run the Mine Safety Commission. ( may have the title wrong ) because congress wasn't in session.

We're not paying for it. Every one knows Congressional salaries come out of the Federal Deficit and not out of our taxes.

Milo.. I'm glad I don't have kids.. LOL.

It is absolutely disgusting. What is worse is that we accept it as if we have no choice. WE allow this to happen. Is the country ready for a new party?

Ya got this right in your neck of the woods... A dem though.. with 90,000 marked bills in his freezer... And he has Nye's sp? support ( mayor of NOrleans ).
We all have them.. from the stats, 50% of Americans feel that their represtatives in Congress are crooks..... If I'm wrong on the %, there are still a lot out there who do.
Next time I watch the news, I'm going to take a pencil and piece of paper....

I know its not Nye.. he is in trouble somewhere else..!!!!!!! But you know who I am referring to....

Mrleft8

aren't you emboldening the enemy with this kind of talk?

I am from MS, not LA. Our political crooks tend to hide their bribes a bit better than their counterparts in Louisianna. It seems to me a huge problem is that almost everyone says; "We need a change, we need something different." What they really mean is; "You other states need to change, our congressmen have been there a long time and we have a little power so we don't need to change anything just yet."

Mrleft8

At this point, I imagine that most people in congress view their constituents as the "enemy"...

Sorry..for some reason, I thought you lived in LA.. Not MS.

No problem Uncas. It is probably storm related. Most people think that N.O. took a direct hit from Katrina and the rest of the Gulf Region had a shingle or two blown off. Numerous times when the discussion of Katrina comes up people say to me "I didn't know you lived in New Orleans." It is hard to explain without sounding petty that many other areas were affected as well.

The one that's not there anymore...

So did Gene Taylor (Dem. 4th District MS) It seems the storm was truely Bi-Partisan.

Enough of Katrina. Is it possible to have an intelligent discussion (without the extreme left and right yelling at each other) on what it will take to change status quo?

My opinion is that this country is in sad shape. It can be blamed equally on both parties, and it started a long time ago.

Cheers... although I don't consider myself as being to the extreme right.

I agree with you completely JT. I wasn't being partisan, I was trying to introduce some humor...

... I was trying to introduce some humor...

I took it as humor, the question is directed at everyone, not you or Uncas. That is a drawback with internet discussions.

Congressmen have obligations other then "Congress being in session."

I would like to see a bit more quality in what they produce.

Congressmen have obligations

Yup, they do.. Robert.. Looking for graft, covering their buts, looking for relationships, covering their buts, looking for pork, covering their buts, looking for better healthcare for themselves, covering their buts...looking for another opportunity to take a vacation.. Yup.. they do. Hell, I opened my freezer this morning and din't find what 80 or 90 thousand sitting there between the beef stew and the lima beans.

ps. In my oroginal post, I added 60 days to the 94 in session... That should be enough as they have not listened well anyway... even with that time among their constituants.

Friday August 19th 2005 GW broke Ronald Reagan's all-time record for most vacation days. The old record was 335 days, though Reagan took his sweet time of eight years to accomplish this feat. President Bush did it in nearly half the time.

I won't give my calloused reflections on this Neocon congress.
I will defer to Matt Taibbi who did a long essay on the many faults of the last twelve years of Republican congresses in a recnt issue of "Rolling Stone". If 10% of what he says is true they are the most irresponsible and unproductive and criminal congress in US history.
I found this article thru' a link on The Daily Kos. Of course, those of you who have sold your souls to The Great God Neocon will be duely offended. And that's as it should be.
Three weeks and counting. Get the sack cloth and ashes ready.
