Recently spent a week kayaking and camping the islands off Stonington, ME. Aside from lobstermen, the only other craft on the water were some of the Maine Windjammers. These were gorgeous gaff-rigged schooners that kept appearing out of nowhere. One night, one of them anchored off of Hells Half-Acre where we were camping and lowered a small sprit-rigged boat for a short recreational sail around the bay.

It was impossible to take a steady video while being tossed around in a kayak, but... http://www.sdrimages.com/gallery/1952215/1/99050120/Medium

Great photos, wonderful video == but what are those paddling noises in the background?
;0 )
Someone (or more likely, several someones) on this forum will be able to identify the windjammer, I'm sure.

Most of them are the schooner Heritage. The second from last looks different and smaller. I was thinking Lewis R French, but the bow is wrong.
Lovely pictures. Wish I was there

Hell's Half Acre is one of my favorite anchorages on the coast, and it IS strange how the schooners seem to appear out of nowhere, isn't it?! Glad you found it, camped there and had such good weather, unless you went through the easterly storm of the last few days.
One of our children said that at low tide the huge boulders on the western side looked like a 'herd of semi-submerged sleeping elephants'.:D

The little one is the Mistress out of Camden; owned by the same folks as The Mercantile and Grace Bailey. Rick

Thanks all for help in identifying these beautiful vessels.
Dave,
This was my first visit to the area, but I will be back. It was an incredible week. We also camped on Wheat Island. You might appreciate these:

Thanks a lot. Spectacular photos!
Sometimes I think over here we are the only ones getting big old boats sailing, but every once in a while somebody here comes up with pictures such as yours and I am truly humbled.

Steve-
Thanks for the link to the trip report pages. It sounds like you had a very refreshing trip with some good companions. Wheat Island looked very nice, amd I've anchored at 'that Irish island' many times. Great pictures, too.

At the risk of this post deviating from the topic of boats (I have no more schooner pics), here are some more pics of the area from the other week. Consider it a post on a beautiful spot for boating.

Your photos are ranked with the forums best, Steve. My spouse and I have spent a week on two different Windjammers enjoying the best of what the coast of Maine can offer. Your pictures bring back many memories.
Thanks

The Isle au Haut light has a B&B in the keeper's house. That's one place I'd like to take my wife for some special anniversary.
