View Full Version : Any wooden boats near Houston/Galveston?

OK, so I am probably about as far from both the Northeast and the Northwest meccas for wooden boats as I can simultaneously be. However, I would REALLY like to go see some wooden boats in person (sailboats preferred, but I won't discriminate against 'stinkpots' or rowers).

Can anybody direct me to any marinas, boatyards, boneyards, or any other locale in the general area where I can at least get a decent look? The more specific the directions, the better (like specific berths if possible). I have good binoculars, if needed!

I guess I can't expect to see too many classics here, but I'm not choosy.

A guy named Don McConnell posted this website about building a Haven 12 1/2 in Galveston a few years ago. I don't know if he is still there.

It might be on the small side of what you're looking for, but I've got a Penobscot 14 for sail and row. I'm in Dickinson, about halfway between Houston and Galveston. If you can wait till next May, come to the Keels and Wheels show on Clear Lake. Mostly powerboats, but sometimes a few sailboats.

Thanks, Dave.

Al, that looks like a nice little boat. Where do you sail her?

I normally sail at Offatt's Bayou in Galveston. Clear Lake is closer, but there's too many power boats and jet skis rushing frantically about trying to see how big a wake they can throw. I'm still a relative beginner at sailing, so I don't go out on the bay. The Penobscot seems a little small for that. This Saturday I'll be up at the "lake" at the Woodlands.

There is a 40+ foot Alden ketch in Clear Lake. The boats name is RENA. She should be at Clear Lake Marine Center or at the Sundance grill. The owner use to sail every Sunday and anyone showing up at the dock was invited. I also saw a beautiful powerboat of about 17 feet, inboard, varnish to die for, at the marine center yesterday. You could also check out Hillman's for boats under repair and then there is PACO where a bunch of free spirits use to keep their boats. The boat in the CAPT RON movie is docked just off Clear Creek and there are a couple of large drop dead beautiful big boats in the same marina (just over the bridge in Kemah). Have a good time!

There's a 44' wood/epoxy Buehler Diesel Duck under construction in Rockport.

Thanks for the leads all.

Al, I went out to the Woodlands today in the early afternoon. I didn't see you there but I did catch the Dragon boat races. Seems like fun.

Jerry,

I went driving around Clear Lake this weekend and stumbled across Rena. She was at the Sundance. Nice looking boat! I couldn't get too close, but she has nice lines. BTW, Rena is offered for charter now.
